Hello! We are! In just the last year alone, we have funded 12 released and upcoming games, and are funding numerous console and mobile ports on top of that
I know it’s easy to focus on the doom and gloom, but I promise you, there are a ton of us who are still making cool video games happen
The “why isn’t anyone funding games anymore?” framing hits a little too close—publishers still spend huge, they’re just increasingly allergic to anything that isn’t a guaranteed hit.
For the same reason people are about to stop throwing money Skydance’s way. Greedy losers like Bobby Kottick intentionally doing bad business to line their own pockets at the expense of the industry
Not for nothing, but I'm an indie dev (in addition to being a business analyst).
AAA failures have a chilling effect on all funding. AAA pouring money into AI, which has destroyed the industry's economy has a huge impact on studios of all sizes. The economy at large also creates funding issues.
So, I'm not just looking at AAA. I'm tracing the industry's issues back up the chain ("follow the money") and seeing where the problems started and continue.
that's great and all, but there ARE people funding game development, they just don't get any publicity because they can't afford the media attention AAA gets.
I guess they still do, but the numbers aren’t what they used to be (as I see it being an indie gamedev). Today it’s hard to imagine an indie game getting funded for, say 300K. Meanwhile, for our team of 2 making #RadioArctica, this would be just the right sum to focus on the game and…
…outsource what we can’t do ourselves. While with less than 100K (a more realistic number these days) we’d still have to constantly think how to pay the bills and spend lots of time on side jobs. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ So probably “no funding” means “little viable funding”.
I imagine part of it had to do with a handful of goofy pricks convincing the people with money that if they ask Claude nicely enough it’ll spit out the next Call of Duty.
