"Chanin did point out that there are more than 600 police officers in Oakland, and most of them do a good job." When we talk about bad apples, it's because there is data. I bet you a lot more of them knew about it but kept quiet.

faine this is so crazy, at the same time knowing how police flying is exempt from a lot of part 91 requirements, it would not surprise me that this type of behavior is widespread across LE agencies

Oh I 100% believe you and it is deeply horrific to contemplate!!! good work on this though now I’m going to sleep more poorly lol

i don't think most people know that for a "qualifying public aircraft operation", which includes federal, state, local, or tribal police aviation, you are exempt from many of the FAA's civil aviation regulations (even if, in practice, many of those are required via agency regs)

I have always found it weird that even military pilots do not have to have FAA licenses. That is less of a concern given the rigor of the military training pipeline. But it’s not zero concern. Military aircraft still fly in civilian airspace and interact with civilian aircraft and controllers.

the coverage doesn't get into much specifics which I understand given the audience, but the core allegation here is that an FAA Aviation Safety Inspector signed off on two checkrides he never gave and two that didn't include required maneuvers this is OUTRAGEOUS

it's also worth noting that ADS-B data played an important role in proving this fraud this is a good reminder of how ADS-B data and transparency in government aviation operations is critical for oversight and accountability
