ymmv on whether you believe the opening thrust of this piece, but its largely unexamined premise is a chief of staff who has so little rapport with the president that she can only enact personnel changes by manipulating what he sees on his television at night www.politico.com/news/2026/10...

‘There are more gun deaths in the US on a single day than there are in the UK, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, and Japan in a year combined. Our weekly total is roughly equal to the annual total of gun deaths of France, Canada, or Germany.’

This week a white nationalist tried to assassinate a member of Congress and you probably didn’t even hear about it—and a reminder that being an elementary school student in the US is more deadly than being an ICE officer: www.doomsdayscenario.co/p/three-shoo...

We don't need DHS. We don't need ICE. CBP is rotten from the core & needs to be fundamentally undone. TSA is security theatre. USCG back to DOD. USSS back to Treasury. FEMA is incredibly important in our era of climate change & shouldn't be politicized as it is now -- make it an Independent Agency.

And the National Guard needs to be completely separated from DOD. Too many folks volunteered thinking they'd be helping their states and communities, but instead are sent to fight in overseas wars.

Incredibly sad and tragic news from Six Flags over Georgia today. Based on current reporting, the restraints on one of the trains of Goliath, the 2006 large steel roller coaster, and the park's premier attraction, failed and at least one rider was ejected as it approached the final brake run.

That rider died and 3-4 others injured. (The other train on the track was stopped as it had started up the lift hill behind the first, and those guests were safely evacuated. This was the footage the local news was running while trying to report with little information available yet.)

If humans did what we are now allowing AI to get away with, they would be in jail, awaiting trial for massive prison terms and financial death sentences for their companies. But because the bots they created and controlled did it, we just shrug our shoulders?

Matt Pearce@mattdpearce.com

80% of AI news at this point consists of a company announcing “we wrote a computer virus” then there’s something about the apocalypse or regulation, then the next news story is like “we wrote another computer virus.”

87% of what MAHA does is harmful to Americans and makes us less healthful (or actively ignores the disparities in the current system). But even a broken clock and all that...

"It is acceptable to engage a child in conversations that are romantic or sensual." Meta removed that language from its internal guidelines after I raised it. AI experts worry financial incentives will blur the line between human relationships and bot engagement. www.reuters.com/investigates...

If Trump really had evidence that a foreign nation had rigged the 2020 election, he wouldn't wait three days to talk about it on TV -- he would just have our intelligence services release it. He would pre-brief members of Congress because he would be asking for a declaration of War. He has nothing.

Trump just doesn't have the cards. He doesn't "carry a Big Stick", as Teddy Roosevelt would say.

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com

This is total insanity. Words fail to explain how anyone let alone a plurality of voters thought giving an obviously demented person control of the most powerful government in the world was a good idea. We will be lucky to come out the other side of this alive.

We are going live! This is going to be my last Twitch stream. We'll still plan on doing fundraiser(s) in the future, but we'll consider this my stream retirement. Start with Hollow Knight, then TBD. Come hang out at twitch.tv/slowpoke316. I hope to see you there. <3

Amazing how, despite claiming 'America First' and 'Energy Independence' and 'Drill Baby Drill', they never lift a finger to suggest that the thing holding that back is refining capability for the crude oil that we actually produce, rather than the sour crude we source from everywhere else...

To strike 1,000 targets in 24 hours in Iran, the U.S. military leveraged the most advanced AI it’s ever used in warfare. Anthropic’s Claude partnered with the military’s Maven Smart System, suggesting targets and issuing precise location coordinates. https://wapo.st/46BFe1T

Sorry I'm not more open-minded about LLMs, it's just some fucking maniacs shoveled out a bunch of useless bloatware featuring that technology, did not give me any chance to opt out, reorganized the entire economy around it, zeroed out gains made by green energy, and made it impossible to buy RAM

It's a Machine, Schroeder. It doesn't get scared, it doesn't get happy, it doesn't get sad, it just runs progress.

happening this morning in Minneapolis -- ICE agents drawing guns on observers. I reiterate again that it is only a matter of time before DHS kills more innocent people in Minnesota. Congress needs to shut this shit down right now.

Thugs think they'll never be held accountable.

Remember: When Tylenol was poisoned *by an outsider* and killed people, the company recalled all their products & redesigned them. When Intel’s Pentium had a bug so obscure it affected 1 in _9 billion_ long division calculations, they recalled their chips. ChatGPT was made deadly *by its team*.

U.S. SUPREME COURT EXTENDS PAUSE ON JUDGE'S ORDER THAT REQUIRED TRUMP ADMINISTRATION TO FULLY FUND FOOD AID FOR 42 MILLION AMERICANS THIS MONTH AMID FEDERAL GOVERNMENT SHUTDOWN

When I was hired at Walmart (May 2000), there were formal training sessions in the Personnel room, followed by an "informal" session with Larry who was directed to urge anyone applying for Food Stamps etc to be sure they weren't wearing their new blue vest when they went into those offices.

I thought the $8/hr (and no benefits) was amazing for that time, having left McDonald's making $5.45/hr. Amazing for me then, but not for anyone that was working to live, to eat, to support a family. They are still hiring in some places for $8/hr in 2025, for less than 29 hrs/week.
