I can no longer in good faith recommend anyone to study in the US, or stay stateside for work and further education after completing degree programs they had started during the Biden era. US higher ed is unrecognizable even compared to a year ago when ICE was kidnapping students from their homes

Jesus Christ: UC Berkeley international students will no longer be allowed to complete internships or co-ops for course credit unless they form an “integral part of an established curriculum,” following repeated threats from ICE. This is going to send shockwaves across SF and Silicon Valley

This week is the first time I'm endorsing the assertion that America's brain drain, the largest since 1930s Nazi Germany, has crossed the point of no return. I no longer think the next Democratic President, even be it AOC, can get the talent, funding, facilities, and reputation back.

That does not mean I don't think it is not worthwhile to expel the fascists and oligarchs out of positions of power. Like a pandemic or the climate crisis, we are all in damage control mode — millions of lives around the world are at stake, even if they have never set foot on the United States

It will take decades to fix the damage that's been done just up to this point. The voters will need to decide how long they will give the Dems a chance to fix it. But Repub have left Dems a financial crisis each time. AI/billionaires will likely create that next crisis. Environment and financial

Voters memories are too short unfortunately. I actually think the next President's term will be a poison chalice. AI bubble popping, markets reacting to the fear that they will be regulated again, government unable to function and stop disasters due to the loss of talent....

I think they will go nowhere. The Chinese economy, particularly the labor market for college graduates, is cooked; India is speedrunning fascism as we speak; the UK is TERF island; and the EU, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand remain bureaucratic cowards until they prove otherwise

A number of countries in Europe have created programs since spring 2025 to attract scientists & researchers in wake of Trump’s attacks on immigrants, science & education. 🇪🇸 🇫🇷 🇳🇴 🇩🇪 🇳🇱 to name a few. However, none have anywhere near the size/scale/$€ to come close to making up for loss in US.

Okay, that's the entire planet fucked, then. 🤭 On a serious note, I believe many American academics are looking primarily at the EU, and the UK given the language. Probably also Australian, New Zealand and Canada. Maybe Japan, I don't know. Certainly many of these have set out welcome mats for...

I can only speak for the cancer Bubble and Germany. The doctors I talked about it so far already see US scientists come to Germany, also the first Germans are coming back to from the US. And while Germany might be a bureaucratic nightmare, other EU countries are not. We are different COUNTRIES! 😑

I am one of those people stuck or rather hung. Neither here nor there. It’s difficult to like go anywhere as people literally spend years searching and planning and it’s just too depressing.

I can’t blame you or anyone for looking for a different way to earn your degrees. It’s a sickening shame what you have to go through. Hopefully when Trump administration is gone we can reinstate the things we’ve lost

Post WW II the people who betrayed their country and humanity did not fair well. And most justice did not come through the court system.

Agree. But I'd go a step further. I can't even tell people to come here for medical treatment that's available elsewhere. If there are hospitals in Europe that offer the same treatment, go to Europe.

Oh please - Education in the Red states have sucked since forever, please your revelation here is just meant to continue the pile on. American education in Blue states are contrary to conclusion posted, but guess it's easier to lazily Troll then honestly engage, when your Aim is more Followers.

There's a lot of things going on in education (and elsewhere) that in a sane country would destroy the administration and most of them are an afterthought to most people, seems like. This is definitely one of them. The amount of long-term damage being done is unfathomable.

One of my students family in China got sick. He went to see them. Stuck for three months now waiting for authorization to reenter. Can’t do work because of the crackdown on data sharing. Int’l ed gives the US enormous cultural reach + ~$43B/yr into the economy. We’re ruled by morons.
