Hi, do you bike with kids on a cargo/family bike in the winter? I’d love to update my winter bike clothing guide to mention this but don’t have kids, so I’m soliciting help! Please let me know if you’d be willing to provide some perspective/experience and I’m happy to credit you on the guide.

Yes, but my setup is not that exciting: cargo bike with rain cover (blocks the wind), then kids just wear whatever they would normally wear outside for the weather. Only bike-specific part is either a balaclava under regular helmet or a ski helmet.

I bike with my kids year-round in Minneapolis. Happy to share what’s worked for keeping both me and the kids warm!

It’s cold out (-18°C), but not cold enough to keep us from enjoying the sunshine and a beautiful winter sunset ☀️

Thanks Stephen! If you’re interested in sharing more, I can DM my email and I’d love your thoughts. My guide is linked in my pinned post and I’d be happy to hear any thoughts on my adult suggestions too.

We are in Calgary. My temp cut off is -15c but lots bike beyond that. The urban arrow rain cover is great for winter riding. When my kids were little I would give them a Magic Bag just to heat up the air a bit, beyond that their regular winter clothing was pretty much all they needed.

Now that they are older, a ski helmet and gloves, goggles if it’s really cold. They are happy to ride most of the year so I try to make it as easy of a choice as possible

Magic bag and the wind break from the cover is such a good hack! We use this too! Then just dress the kids for outside (we use ski gear cuz that's what we already have). I always have a couple of old fleece baby blankets so they can be cozy and then hand and feet warmers if it's super cold.

Thanks for the reminder... my kids keep telling me about a rumoured USB-powered heated blanket. Perhaps a whole cargo box of Magic Bags is the low-tech solution I'm looking for when we hit -20. And yeah, kids insist on that rain cover, which I don't mind unless we get a (rare) windy day.

Magic Bags definitely work for us. Costco used to have heated stadium seats that I thought about trying but I’m cheap and I didn’t want to spend $50 on a heated seat that may or may not work.

We're in Calgary and ride through the winter. Same as most people are saying: when it's really cold, they wear their winter gear, we put the rain cover on to block the wind, & sometimes add a magic bag. Hand warmers, fleece blankets, & the Burton Burke Hood Helmet are some other favs.

My pinned post is my guide to winter cycling, and somewhere in the thread are specifics for women needed to dress professionally at the office after a winter commute by bike.

Our trips are about 10-12 minutes and our winters are mild in the DC region so I usually have them put on a thin hat under their helmet and gloves/mittens. Sometimes, I will cinch up the rain cape to provide a bit more protection against the wind/cold
