Health messages on cigarette packets have worked. We should do the same with betting shops. A third of the frontage should have a big yellow on black sign saying "We're still in business because you keep on losing. You're all losers."

They should ban gambling apps while they're at it. Some blokes I work with are constantly betting on things. The conversations they have are basically "first goalscorer, final score, how many goals and so on." All I can think is "how much money are you wasting?"

They should have them for vaping too, something like ‘Sucking on this vape makes you look pathetic, it’s like a pacifier for adults, embarrassing stuff!’ That type of thing

I told this story here before, but a colleague was a gambler back in the 70s. One night his old car wouldn't start after he had been in the bookies. Still working under the bonnet at closing time, the bookie kindly offered him a lift once he had locked up. In his new Porsche. He never gambled again.

Here (Aust.) the Govt put gory photos on packs, so smokers bought cases. Then they labelled them all in khaki so the colourful familiar logos vanished. Smokers still bought. Studies reported some degree of health outcomes tho. Totally agree with you on the betting advertising; most is banned here.

In fairness, the general look of the customers going in and out of these shops has worked wonders for putting me off ever going in. Never seen a single one looking like one of life's winners.

This would be hard to pull off, but I think we could ban ads where someone wins every time. Perhaps they should reflect the actual odds. Slot machine that takes a hundred spins to pay out? Sure! But show every last one in your ad

Agreed, and put cancer on it too. That's the one ill-outcome that nobody seems to gravitate to with alcohol, but it's been directly linked to 7 kinds of cancer, and has been classified as a group 1 carcinogen (along with tobacco, ionising radiation, and asbestos, among others) by the WHO in 1988.

Processed meats (bacon, ham, sausages) are group 1 carcinogens too, as is ultraviolet radiation. Nobody has a pack of 20 bacons a day for 30 years, and very few a pack of 20 beers a day for 30 years. Do you want to be reminded of death on Sunday mornings and at birthday and Christmas parties?

We currently having to attend church because we are playing the game to get our kid into the local good secondary school. So, yeah, we take our kids to a building with a gigantic statue of a man being tortured to death every Sunday morning while the vicar tells them they are sinners. Healthy stuff.
