Powell: "GDP growth has slowed notably in the first half of this year, to a pace of 1.2%, roughly half the 2.5% pace in 2024. The declining growth has largely reflected a slowdown in consumer spending ... higher tariffs have begun to push up prices in some categories of goods."

We stock up pretty good on food and consumables and have a local beef order coming soon. Started during COVID, now once again, gotta prepare. Nothing wrong with being an alarm 🙂

Stagflation hurts. I have my diary from the 80s. Today I lost my job. My husband lost his job. Our house is in foreclosure. Worst Christmas in my life. IRS lien. Sick as a dog & can't afford a doctor. Can't afford gas. The car won't run. Can't afford coffee.... for years. Deja vu...

One always needs to look at the international context to get a handle on economic performance. In 2024, the IMF said the US was carrying the world economy upward, revised the US growth upward. In 2025, the IMF revised US growth down, saying the US will drag down the world economy. Simple.

emarketer.comUS tariffs and uncertainty will drag down global economic growthTariffs will hurt US economic growth this year: The IMF expects growth of just 1.8%, as the trade war and rampant uncertainty chill consumer and business spending.

But that’s because they’re anti-Trump! What, you have data to support this? Fake news! Data lies! It’s Obama’s fault. And Biden’s fault! And Kamala’s fault! Etc, etc, etc ad infinitum.

the rest of the world are anti-Trump but that is due to them having eyes to see the idiocy of his supporters, appointments, policies and pronouncements. If they choose not to mention it while in Washington it’s only to mitigate the idiocy as it directly affects them!

This sounds odd, as it is bad news all round…but it is a relief to have facts presented by a dedicated public servant in a rational manner. Particularly, as the WH now resembles Fraggle Rock. Miss the good old days when the US whispered and the world stopped to listen.

By end of January I had put myself in self-recession. No eating out, necessary groceries only, etc... My maga friends are spending like nothing’s changed. Our $ is the only power we have - let maga keep the country afloat until they realize they can’t.

After Trump got re-elected I made sure to make my big purchases immediately thereafter. By April I was done and have just been saving ever since. I know I'm not alone and that consumers like me were making the economy look better than what it actually was. Now numbers are catching up.

I have a teeny garden space, but so many trees on my property that I don't have enough sun to make a larger garden; and my efforts at growing my own have had scattered, minimal success. But I have been thinking about how I might find another spot to turn into a garden for veggies. Necessity.

SAME. I was told repeatedly that I was over-reacting (because that is always the line with the Trump apologists). I was also told I was nuts prepandemic for keeping 6 months of food in the pantry. I’ve since bumped it to a year+ so I can ride it out & share in my little free pantry out front. FAFO

I was working at a financial publication in November after the election and I was pulling my hair out like “guys he says he’s going to raise tariffs at every event” and most of them thought I was overreacting too. I’m glad to be out of that place and in actual reality

So I guess we should all applause Trump 4 giving wealthy ppl in America a tax cut, while raising the cost of goods & services 4 everybody else! I guess once the Fed cuts rates, housing costs r going thru the roof! Middle class is broke after paying 4 insurances, mortgages/rents, taxes & gas! Nice!

I was in a sporting goods store yesterday & some prices are outrageous. The vendors charge the store more, & the store charges the customer more. And guess who is responsible for that? Mr. Tariff, that's who. During the campaign last year, why didn't he mention tariffs? Lack of courage, that's why.

I wanted to buy a 1 pound pack of strawberries at the grocery store earlier today but they were $6 and looked over ripe. I had to pass on them, looks like most other people did as well. They'll all end up in the garbage by tomorrow. This is not sustainable.

And it will only get worse as both tariffs and the agricultural labor shortage start to squeeze our economy. Remember, we are only 8 months in. We are just starting to see the tip of the iceberg impact. Not the full one, and not for at least another year.

I had a conversation exactly like that with 2 women whom I know personally. They argued that prices haven't risen. It was so hard not to call them idiots. I told them I'm fairly certain Walmart didn't raise prices when I was shopping and lower them when they came in.

Except when they don’t have it thanks to a president ignorant of how the economy works. Nice try! Pick up your participation trophy and cookie at the door! 🤡

Sister.Stone... Hate to say, but we know now that not being able to buy groceries or pay rent or mortgage is the only language that will cause that come to Jesus moment. As you said, how far off can it be? Not even fascism has worked. I hope the pocketbook does.

Suck it, Trump! The TRUTH, something you're not the vaguest bit familiar with, HURTS! and according to Heather Cox Richardson just this morning, those tariffs are hurting rural families far more than urban and suburban families. We have a lot more options and resources. Keep screwing MAGA.

Aside from large no. of issues Simplistic take So heavy Tariffs imply you want domestic production to go up , Depend less on imports, create more within the country. Your immigration policy Suggests, you don't actually want people who would do the producing part ? So what's yer plan genius?

The Fed is in a difficult situation, Trump wants to prime our economy, even though he has fostered foreign boycotts of US, but is willing to risk stagflation, high inflation and high unemployment. The worst of all worlds and the perfect storm

The reason home sales are good, is because it’s a cyclical market and sales are always good in the summer quarter because people try to move when their kids are out of school preferably. Just as home sales are characteristically depressed and slow in winter months.

The criminal couldn't get Powell to lower interest rates directly, so he's trashing the economy to the point where Powell has to lower interest rates. Pathetic. And dangerous.

I dont know, but it's a lie. Maybe hes hoping businesses will continue to absorb a chunk 🤷‍♀️ the tariff pause with China ends in Nov. We have customers rushing stuff in to avoid any changes so on paper it looks like things are moving. Our average tariff for what we sell is 37.5%, not sustainable

I work in global sourcing this will not be short lived..we actually just started marking up the tariffs even more before we pass to customers, who in turn are going to further mark them up before passing them to you...my house is planning for great depression 2.0. This is not hyperbole

Companies are going to be very picky where they put inventory and what they buy due to demand and you don't know if the next container you purchase will be significantly more. No one knows what 90 days from now looks like

For example leading up to the pause we only had 75k of sales for 4 week window, tariff pause implemented and 750k in orders for the next 4 weeks. If youre in rural areas look at your stores. My costco has ZERO Halloween and it's almost September, same with Lowe's. Bigger areas will get the inventory

I couldn't tell you but it's a lie. This is exactly like what we saw during covid except massive freight increases were driving that. The data is shit right now because most Co. are bringing stuff in only during pauses, like now. So an influx of goods are coming before Nov, then who knows

Tariff effect on inflation. Like is just one inflation jump and then inflation stays there for a year. If the effect would not be short lived, then inflation could keep increasing.

3,2,1, the orange buffoon will say the numbers are wrong. Based on the numbers reported by retailers this week, costs have increased in 2nd quarter. Home Depot said they will need to raise prices.

Prices are ridiculous. I went to Albertson’s to get cream cheese. Everything was like four dollars. Milk was up to 3.45 half gallon Coffee basic folders coffee $18 Most coffee was 24 For just like 16 ounces I had to go to Aldi’s Cream cheese was $1.50 Milk was 249 for a half gallon

Tariffs do encourage domestic supply but the costs don't go down, domestic producers charge just slightly less than importers with tariffs included. That is the fiduciary responsibility of a CEO and Board of Directors. Shareholders will demand nothing less. Thus, prices will increase and stay high.

If you are wondering WHY Jackson Hole WY is the setting? The oligarchy has bought control of this area. Bunker homes into the mountains, gold depositories in house, tax haven refuge away from the common folk drama. Check out the private aircraft at the JH AIRPORT JAC.

" the greatest economy in the history of mankind. eggs are 12c/doz, gas is 99c/gallon. i am the greatest economist in the history of the world. the greatest job creator since man walked on 2 legs...but no one ever ever gives me credit for anything."

and copious amounts of ketchup asprayed the walls of the WH, followed by a coordinated stream of "fake news" and "fake data" and whatnot, covered by the mainstream press as "interesting" and "maybe POTUS has a point", etc

If you go on X, you will learn that they are indeed happy. They voted for hate, imposing misery on others, and retribution. Rising prices and a flailing economy are just the price they are willing to pay.

That's wise. I leave there with elevated blood pressure every time. I go there once in a while because I don't believe that covering your eyes and ignoring what the other side is doing helps anyone.

Today some ladies I know were on FB arguing that inflation is down and so are prices at the grocery store. I was nice, but I so longed to call them fools. Walmart announced they raised prices, so they can say what they want

You have a point. I feel as though I'm riding down the highway going 100MPH with a drunk at the wheel. I don't know if I should cover my eyes so I don't see disaster when it hits or leave them wide open so I can see it coming

Recessions do not need to be instant events. Things will continue to slow. Any correction will require time as well. The combined impact of Trump policies will take time but ultimately leave the US in a much worse position. Such an unforced error....
