"Unlike the 'meritocracy' they are trying to build in which white men are restored to their proper dominance, the Olympics are pretty close to a true meritocracy. Conservatives can’t whine that Simone Biles or Chloe Kim must have gotten their spots by pushing aside a more 'qualified' white athlete."

publicnotice.coYeah, US Olympians are woke. Deal with it.Sports have always been political — it's just a question of who's speaking out.

the hostility toward members of the Olympians from the right is only going to get worse when they are in LA in 2028, when diversity is really on display, skin color isn’t hidden under winter clothing, the country is on the world stage & may be more different than we can imagine

Sean Duffy's daughter wants to impose a MAGA ideological purity test on our athletes, which would make our Olympic team both pathetically uncompetitive and impossible to root for.

I hate sports. However I love the Summer & Winter Olympic Games. I watch everything except Basketball. Athletes are chosen because they are the best of the best. Have spent years training for 1, 2, if lucky 3 times to win gold. The best person wins no matter where in the world they live.

What is also notable in these examples in that even in the midst of competition these athletes are a tight team, and promote each others' achievements. Simone Biles a paradigm of that, and the recent women's ice skating podium a lovely joyful celebration between countries.

Reporters are playing the little devil on the shoulder here, and the real victims are the athletes. They know exactly what response they’ll get if they ask a very young Olympian about American politics right now, and the athletes know they’ll get Sydney Sweeneyed if they evade the question.

I’m here to say, though, that putting your child into competitive sports is a high cost process. And you start with privilege and maybe some talent, and then with more money and dedication you can get greatness. We campaigned for Olympic sailing so know that $$ can be a huge barrier.
