Love this! Dispose of your trash properly, people! It shouldn't take a crazy cool device to clean up after humans who litter like this world is disposable; do it yourselves!

Back in the 1960’s when the “recycling bing” came into existence, it seemed like a great idea! Unfortunately, like many things, they took the “easy “ way out. Instead of reusing/recycling, we now have huge barges of plastic floating all over the world. Why spend the money to reuse!😩😵‍💫🤬

😎🪴🌵 that is so very necessary. A special hat tip of thanks to the folks operating the mechanism. Are they scheduling anything with the newly renamed America Ocean?

And what are we doing with all this plastic waste? Where do we dump it next? When will we stop producing this deadly toxic single use product that is invading the cell structures of every lifeform? When do we find a way to safely eliminate this product before it kills everything? WHEN?

Let them, they'll look pretty ridiculous threatening a 70 yr old bed ridden woman. Though I would not hesitate to volunteer for their firing squads, I do believe in due process. No I was referring to all the death threats he & his wife constantly whine about which is ironic yet clearly deserved.

Yep There was no such thing as plastic stuff when I was growing up. It was all glass, cardboard and paper. We need to rid the world of it or, as you suggested, find a way to dispose of it safely.

Plastic makes sense in some applications. But for food & liquid. as a disposable container it's terrible. The problem is NGL's as a byproduct of natural gas refinement is so very cheap. So it's very cost-sensible. But the way they make such plastic—it isn't biodegradable & recycling is more costly.

On a smaller level, and I’m only beginning w/ them hence I’ve not much info, but Ridwell has a very good service, both mail in & depending on State, pick up & has definite markets for the various plastics they take in that municipal recycling doesn’t. We should all check them out! 🙏🩵👊♻️🌎

There are lots of theoretical/prototype versions of "ocean cleaners." Look at "The Ocean Cleanup" and "SeaVax," "WasteShark" and "ClearBot." I don't think a lot of people have any idea of just how big the oceans are.

The modern digital paradox: we've reached the pinnacle of human communication technology just to revert back to pointing at things and nodding.

Some companies buy certain plastics to recycle into materials for clothing and other items. We have a couple companies here in Hawaii that use these fabrics for neoprene type dive gear, rash guards etc. Kumana and Tropical Seas are two but there’s several others like Nudi Wear.

This post contains no information about the device, not who built it, now how long it's been operating, not how much trash it collects, just a claim about how much area it covers. No links, no reference points to other publications. Doesn't even have a real photograph or the name of the device. Sus

I had an idea for a fleet of factory ships that would scoop up ocean plastic and turn it into construction materials like deck boards or plastic beads that could be used in injection molding.

And I imagine you gave up because of course you discovered how expensive it is to sort plastic, because you would only want the good stuff with long polymer chains and not the rubbish that's been breaking down in seawater and sunlight for years. Alas, plastic is not glass.

Sorted, then certain types that can be recycled are, like plastic bottles can be made into a multitude of things, including fabrics. Nets can be recycled into numerous items as well. Anything with no value is taken to landfills.

I love this! ♥️ I also wish there were no need for it! What are we doing? Why is there tons of man-made plastic in our oceans? We need to do better than damage control, take better care of Mother Earth, and stop causing the damage in the first place!

Sadly not true. The largest device is about a quarter that size and gathers trash much more slowly.

Great invention! We need scientists inventing these kind of things to make the world better and cleaner!

This is awesome, and all clean-ups are needed and amazing. Micro/ nano plastics, and #PFAS are killing us still. AND don’t let the oil and gas companies, who are now pushing plastic manufacturing as their next evolution, use clean-up as a rational for MORE #plasticpoison in our lives. Please.

We are paying through the fucking nose for data centers..I think the Broligarchs can stop taking needed jobs away from humans and giving dangerous/toxic jobs to robots (if we must have them). PS. The devil has enough advocates. 🙄

Sad they have to do this to begin with We aren't very good stewards now are we? Thanks for the ones inventing these things like the young woman who made a device to get microplastics out of our drinking water Smart women are what scares the RNC most

Could just stop India using rivers as landfill dump sites ... could do that. Be 100,000 times cheaper than trying to mow the lawn with a pair of scissors.

The math though... one device is about ~50 years to clean the pacific ocean. That is assuming all plastics stopped going into it, today. And, that it can reach the floor or somehow collect from it. The cart is already in Florida while the mare is still pregnant in LA.

There are plastic consuming insects, (wax moths, nightmare for beekeepers, devour single use plastics) algae’s but neither are fast . But, slow is better than waiting for a half-life ..

Nods, also we have the tech to turn it back into oil, but it is "not cost effective" :( That said, even just bundling it up by type and storing it until we can recycle it or find a way to biodegrade it. Is better then just dumping it, into landfills or the ocean.

It's one of those "there's no free lunch" or the law of thermal dynamics. The reason they're a problem is that they're extremely stable, essentially at a really low energy state already. To turn them into oil you will need to supply a lot of energy. Energy that might be better used to

We all recycle, but I found out here in Canada we collect it and ship it to the Philippines or the US. I thought we were recycling it!? Just shipping the problem downstream doesn't solve anything. Why can't they actually recycle it?

Unlike glass, plastic is badly downgraded every time it's recycled. So, say, a transparent drink bottle might be turned into a lid but it will never become a transparent drink bottle again. And so the dozens of types of plastic (softer, harder, coloured etc.) make sorting very difficult and costly

Gee…can’t WAIT until the GOP finds something wrong with it… “It’s killing the whales…they’re jumping up to get out of the way and are being sliced in two by the windmills…” Hey REPUBLICAN JACKASSES… TAG…YOU’RE IT…

Yo 13! You nailed it…they are BOUGHT & PAID FOR by Fossil Fuel Industry…and in process DESTROYING OUR PLANET…hopefully not irreparably. But when something so SIMPLE/BASIC like this comes down the Pike…they go APOPLECTIC… As a SCUBA DIVER I see FIRSTHAND damage done to reefs, etc. PAYOLA RULES…

100%. All of my Republican friends pride themselves in dumping their trash directly into the river. One time I was walking along the beach and I picked up a plastic bag from the surf. A guy in a maga hat ran up, punched my nose, threw the bag down, then smashed a dolphin's head with a rock.
