It's a worse spellchecker, too. I need to do emails in a few different languages a day, and old one was pretty good at naturally swapping between them. I started getting spelling suggestions to change Catalan words to English they vaguely resembled this week, and just this morning found out why ^^^

They do that on purpose because adoption of this AI garbage is terrible and not enough people will use it if they aren't forced into it, and without adoption they can't justify their spending.

I'm just sooooo glad that I now pay like $10 more a month for Google Workspaces _with AI_ that I'll never ever use.

Totally understand the reaction -- the setting, however, doesn't have anything to do with training (Google doesn't train on private Gmail conversations). By "scanning", it passes the content to an ML model, and uses the result to classify your email. It doesn't store anything else.

I understand your suspicion. Tech companies will continue to add AI where you don't want it. Google is legally bound not to train on private emails, and I personally know the people there who would blow the whistle if they did. They should definitely communicate this better.

Sounds like a headache but it does look like it didn't delete the actual emails, just the feature that sorts them? Am I correct? (That's bad enough, like 100% asshole move, but the alternative would surely get them sued.)

This has made GMail, which I've used since virtually the beginning (20 years!), almost unusable for me (or, not unusable per se, but ~infinitely much more work). I was fine with ordinary ML classifiers helping sort my email, but not this BS. Time to look for a new email provider.

Itโ€™s not โ€œlikeโ€ that, itโ€™s precisely that. โ€œIf youโ€™re not going to do what we want, weโ€™re going to make it as difficult as possible for you until you do.โ€ Fuck you, Google. That makes me all the more determined not to change my mind.
