Yeah that happened to me too 😡 Silver lining in my case though: I've been meaning to migrate to Protonmail for years at this point but never got around to it, but this was exactly the push I needed lol, thanks google 👋

I turned those features off about 6 mos ago. It was super painful at first, but as I took the time to unsubscribe from a zillion stupid notifications I never read anyway, I no longer miss the other tabs. (It is stupid that they connected that to Gemini tho.)

Maybe this enshitification will have a positive side effect. Maybe the mass “unsubscribe” activity by so many users will show these companies that WE DON’T ACTUALLY READ THEIR SHIT and they’ll cut it out.

Spell check is a "smart feature". Fucking spell check. The thing that's been functional without an internet connection for some 30 or more years now. My hatred of tech companies continues to grow.

I am also raging and trying to figure out what I can do to improve the sorting of my inbox. I have a bunch of filters so I don't miss important emails from my kids' schools, but I can't figure out how to make an "Inbox Section" that includes multiple filters.

I had the same issue and went on a small "Unsubscribe" spree. Actually interested in keeping everything in one place for a while. In the old days it made me very aware of the spam and I would aggressively unsub. Will see if this works in the new age.

You don't want ai??? Well we're gonna stomp our feet and make your inbox worse!! Every email from your doctor to Walmart is going to pile up in the same place! Get ready to lose important emails in minutes as they're pushed down by oil change ads! You want AI nooooowww??

Gmail added a Manage Subscriptions feature. It’s collapsed in the left hand menu. You can unsubscribe from things in mass from there. It won’t clean what is already there but it will help keep it cleaner.

ugh. More and more spam/promotion were making it through their inbox filtering into my general inbox anyway. Maybe it's time for me to rip the bandaid off and make a switch to protonmail.

It's a worse spellchecker, too. I need to do emails in a few different languages a day, and old one was pretty good at naturally swapping between them. I started getting spelling suggestions to change Catalan words to English they vaguely resembled this week, and just this morning found out why ^^^

They do that on purpose because adoption of this AI garbage is terrible and not enough people will use it if they aren't forced into it, and without adoption they can't justify their spending.

Totally understand the reaction -- the setting, however, doesn't have anything to do with training (Google doesn't train on private Gmail conversations). By "scanning", it passes the content to an ML model, and uses the result to classify your email. It doesn't store anything else.

Sounds like a headache but it does look like it didn't delete the actual emails, just the feature that sorts them? Am I correct? (That's bad enough, like 100% asshole move, but the alternative would surely get them sued.)

This has made GMail, which I've used since virtually the beginning (20 years!), almost unusable for me (or, not unusable per se, but ~infinitely much more work). I was fine with ordinary ML classifiers helping sort my email, but not this BS. Time to look for a new email provider.

Luckily it seems these folders still exist, it just doesn't auto-filter. But I still have a "promotions" folder on the sidebar. I can go in, tell it to select every message in the folder, and just mass delete. It will take a while but seems to be working.

The tabs have gone away but the categories in general stll exist on the side. This is in no way a replacement since everyhting still is in the one giant inbox, but I basically updated my email filtering rules to minimize the damage.

What helped me was clicking Google Workspace smart features and turning off Smart Features just for Google Workspace, which explicitly calls out Gemini usage. I think the other Smart Features mainly applies to auto-sorting emails and promotions? (I’m not positive though)

the shit i joked about with my middle school classmates became real, i remember back when we first got a "smart" board and we started calling it the dumb board cuz it barely worked and like 15 years later now we're getting ai everywhere that breaks everything good

Many people have noted that the Primary / Social / Forums / Updates tabs are missing when you do this 👀. You can recreate these manually using the "Multiple Inbox" setup in settings. Basically, tell your inbox to include emails tagged "inbox" and exclude the social / forums / updates.

I was also thinking the exact same thing once I saw those tabs disappear – and I think that was purposefully done. Those tabs are quality of life enhancers in world of email. But it took me 30 minutes to figure this out. I think you could set this up in 5-10 minutes and be mostly satisfied.

To replicate the dealfault layout, I’m trying: Section 1: [is:important] [Important] Section 2: [is:starred] [Starred] Section 3: [is:inbox -is:social -is:promotions] [Primary] Can also do -is:updates -is:forums -is:purchases if desired. Will still see unfiltered Inbox below.

That happened to me too. But part of my email reading system is treating it like a todo, so that anytime I have read an email, I unclick the "inbox" label. So once I added the "is:inbox" (and excluded the tab labels), my email returned to normal.

Huh. I'll have to mess with it--mine definitely wasn't normal. I've switched it back for the moment, and am deleting all my promotions so at least those don't get carried over somehow. I think it might be time to move on from gmail.....

If you don't need the tabs across the top, you can just go into settings/labels and set Updates, Social, Forums etc to 'Show' and they will appear again, with all their contents, on the left under Inbox, Starred, Snooze etc

I did this. I added Promotions as well. Set up Primary to stack above Inbox. The problem is now that Smart features is off Gmail is no longer marking new emails a promotions. So old email from merchants is still a promotion but new is not.

Yeah, some clarification. It doesn't recreate the tabs as they were at the top like before, just the general functionality ( filtered groups of emails). Also you can adjust the number of emails you see in the settings (it doesn't have to be 9). But you are right, this is not to remake the tabs. sry.

Huh, apparently I already had all of that sort of thing turned off. I assume I must've opted out of something /years/ (& years) ago & it just inherited the setting?

I believe this is inaccurate - this setting existed long before GenAI. It looks like they might have tried to soup up the suggested reply feature with Gemini, but I already had that turned off. The features I use are identical to how they've been for ~10 years.

can't rule out that it's thanks to EU. can't rule out that I'd have disabled something / not enabled something earlier that implies new "smart" options are disabled by "default" today ... Can't rule out either that the original poster got hot about the issue a bit quickly.

Did they also add it to google maps a few months ago? There has been a steep decline in tracking logic. I live in nyc where lots of highways cross over dense neighborhoods and it has been bouncing my car all over nearby streets over and over in a way that was never an issue before. Its every day now

Good looking out. Turned it off but noticed Google has tied this to basic features like auto-correct. Absolutely abhorrent. Basically a Hobson's choice. Fuck you, Google

It feels like it's getting to a point where you have to do a weekly check of anything related to a company that does AI: did my gmail turn on AI? What horrible stunt is MIcrosoft pulling on me today? I love having to be constantly on the lookout for being tricked into using AI

Thank you for this! Done. It turned off grammar, spelling, autocorrect, smart compose, smart compose personalization, smart reply, package tracking and desktop notifications. I think I’ll live.

Unfortunately, this also turns off any kind of mail sorting. And my "promotions" tab is already too overwhelming. I'd love to do this, if anyone has any tips on actually reorganizing my inbox (outside of "delete 60k messages, with no distinction").

I have hundreds of filters and use labels to sort my incoming gmail mail- new sender, new filter. It would take a long time to set it up from scratch though. Makes everything easier to find though!

They have also bundled the spelling checker into the 'smart features' so turning off AI removes a core feature that has been there for 20 years. This is a 'dark pattern' of deliberately dysfunctional design aimed at coercing the user to go against their own interests and to invalidate their choices.

"that's the one that reads your content" Gmail has always read your content. The given is that it's using it for machine learning. It may seem like a semantic argument, but I am shocked at how many people don't know Gmail reads their emails.

these categories are literally powered by machine learning and always have been. If you tick the option to specifically turn machine learning/AI off, it does exactly that.

Plus searching seems to be screwed up. I sometimes look to search for Reddit or Substack to clean out all the emails I don't need. That's not working. What utter foolishness! Looks like I'll be doing a bunch of unsubscribing just to reduce the volume of emails that are all now in one basket.

Man, Google sucks for doing this. Autocomplete and spellcheck also get turned off if you undo Gemini. And the Promotions and Social tabs disappear as well. So much for Don't be evil.

I like how I had "smart compose" turned off, but "smart compose personalization" was still on... Yes google, I want you to scan my emails and collect data for a feature I don't want... Ugh 🙃

While individual observations are useful, they can be the result of a/b testing, regional rollout, etc. What I'm interested in tracking down is evidence is broader policy/eula changes.

Thank you for sharing. Despite the loss of tabs, I will persevere knowing for now AI can't read my emails. May even help me clean out my email box!

Thanks for the heads-up. I usually get my Gmail through Thunderbird, only opening the Gmail interface every third month. Living in the EU, it seems they had to ask me directly if I wanted these features. So I could choose 'don't turn on' a couple of times in a mandatory pop-up. Still, thx!

Proton.me is your friend. Did the switch very early on into the new American administration - they didn’t sign up to any of the AI safety/security institutes codes of conduct back in Feb (unlike all other ‘first world’ countries) - became apparent that the States has become a new Wild West again.

And of course they have alowlist and exclude list instead of the human terms. White list and blacklist that never had any racial connotations ever. Just to show the kinds of people that want to push this a I stuff as benevolent.

On a related note, I noticed I had over 30,000 unread emails this afternoon! I guess the habit Gmail gave me is not to delete emails, just mark them read. Guessing changing the settings caused the behavior Anyway, used the Mark all Read for all unread messages to fix it (took awhile). Whew!
