“A social media ban for kids under 16 will soon become law in Canada according to a new report…The ban is part of an online harms bill being tabled in Ottawa on Wednesday. An Angus Reid study found that 75% of Canadians support a ban on social media for kids under 16.” I support it.

The ban should be also for adults. This will end networking effect of these big tech media, and collapse automatically. bsky.app/profile/sili...

India banned TikTok. If we ban X, Facebook, and Instagram, it will safeguard our children's future. Enough is enough. iambrainstorming.github.io/chapters/phi...

If so you'll change your mind. These kinds of laws are bad for kids and adults alike, and a gift for the power of tech companies. Kids deserve access to and involvement with their world. Regulate big tech to not push harmful crap that knowingly harms users instead.

In Australia (the 1st to do so) “Two-thirds of under-16s have remained on social media platforms since the ban came into effect in December. But for those who were kicked off, the change has meant seeing less news than before the ban.” www.theguardian.com/australia-ne...

A social media ban for kids under 16 is like banning kids from the streets because they are not safe, instead of making the streets safe.

Guaranteed if you asked a parent if they agree with a social media ban they would say yes, and than when you mention that would typically mean everyone would need to share some form of ID on the internet to verify, they would backpedal pretty quick

"well surely there has to be another way" yeah the other way is regulating and holding the platforms responsible for this shit but this government is pretty quick to bow to corporate interests so that's not gonna happen

I am a parent and I wouldn't agree with a ban. I have the tools available to limit and monitor my child's social media use already. Social media taught my child her favourite hobby, crochet, and she relies on it for new ideas for her projects.

If people under 18 had voting rights and politicians had to fear losing millions of votes, maybe they wouldn't have dared to do this, or they would have thought twice about it.

There is another way of handling this issue. It's called parenting. Explain to your kids why they shouldn't lose themselves on social media. How to think critically and not be taken in by lies and propaganda. Media literacy should be a required part of education.

And HOW will they stop kids who are far more tech savvy than their parents from getting around the ban? They going to verify ID? Who wants to give personal information of that sort to massive corporations known for abusing access to such information? If Bluesky asks for my license, it can get bent.

Why? It's impossible for it to be effective and in order to implement it you'll have to identify yourself and submit to constant surveillance of yourself and everyone else accessing the internet. Along with C-22, this is another step towards totalitarianism.

My teen isn't on social media because I,the parent,am responsible for who with and how they interact online.Don't need big brother if you have a mother. However, the tech companies do prey on underage kids and should have stricter regulations and consequences for any dangerous outcomes,Tumbler Ridge.

I don't, it is a terrible idea. All it will mean is parents giving kids access on their adult accounts, meaning the kids are far more likely to be exposed to inappropriate content. It is a cop out to avoid having to implement any real reform of, or control of, the big social media platforms.

The youth being “deplatformed" and forced to use workarounds instead of supported or companies being held accountable. At the same time invading the privacy of every person in Canada to enforce this. C22 is a sham.

Privacy-invading age verification is the sting in these stories, though. Any time someone says, "Think of the children!" You should look around and see if they're trying to smuggle in some right wing policy.

I'm 100% against it, I have an 11 year old daughter who uses Kids Messenger - I control who she talks to. She is safe, talks to me about stuff. This is purely for bad parents and to make voters feel like they are doing something. Better surveillance online of social media, chase down the criminals.

Many governments are just too scared to deal with the problems of extreme politics, hateful comments and porn and the billionairs who sell it. I'm an adult and I dont want to have to navigate my valuable time, on this earth, through this pernicious crap on apps!

Remember when we're taught "Never use your real name on the internet, you don't know who you're talking to"? In this age of fascism, lynchings, police brutality; you don't see why mass surveilance is a bad thing for society? Because this will get people killed.

Maybe the incredibly profitable foreign companies should have to hire large moderating teams and make social media safe for everyone if they want to operate in Canada instead.

The moment you introduce age checks, that’s when the internet is no longer free and open and everyone is now fully under surveillance by the fascists in government. Mark Carney is destroying our climate and humanity with increased fossil fuels. You think he has good ideas?

While that is becoming more and more true, it’s still false. Big tech hasn’t taken over the internet. What has happened is that Big Tech has taken over governments. Most of the internet is still open and free if you choose to avoid big tech.
