Y'know? I think gamers are more progressive in general from personal experience, but have an over represented cohort of bigoted and hateful assholes because the industry over the past decade has enjoyed having people who'll act as industry attack dogs it weaponizes against employees and critics...

Gamers must rise up to support Republicans this November if we want to save our society

These people are always so vague about what exactly is wrong. Because if they actually articulated exactly what they don't like seeing in media, they'd sound like stupid babies. Instead they go oh well THIS group doesn't like what they're seeing... Do they? Y'all see how well Balders Gate 3 did

It's also just a classic move for grifters to co-opt a group name to try to validate their dumbass opinions. Gamers is an easy name. It's such a vast population & isn't a strong identity, doesn't feel worth defending. What qualifies a gamer? Has played a game. Ben Shapiro speaks for gamers lol

I genuinely think it's just a meme that's lived on far too long. Like gamers told people that online sports betting would be very bad cause we saw it with MTX. So many game streamers raise endless money for good causes, from children's hospitals to the Trans hotline.

There's bad people in every fandom but Gamers get hit with it hardest cause Twitter and tech bros uplift assholes over the people doing good things to save and better the lives of total strangers.

Which is insane as someone who's primarily been a PC gamer my whole life. Ah yes the chest-thumping, masculine exhilaration of running an amusement park or a zoo, or clicking around in a prerendered environment to solve puzzles. Yes I'm being facetious, and yes I played DOOM/Quake but still c'mon.

Thing is, I've been playing Runescape recently, there's a reputation for bigotry, particularly in certain areas. But I started to notice: it's the same few sad losers who are there shouting every day, and everyone else turns off chat to ignore them. So it just looks and sounds like a lot of them.

tbh the lack of votekick in MMOs leaves them having a bit of a Nazi bar effect in chat. Like I'm just trying to click stuff till the number goes up, not learn the latest bullshit /pol/ came up with. But if some dude is making chat unusable and we could votekick him? Shit might change

It's also just every outlet supporting those views. There's way bigger reporting on something like a new cod or gta than there ever would be on something like sims or ESO Including Steam+X being the hotspot for all the vile stuff that they regurgitate elsewhere

I remember reading something about how some game developers were afraid or put off union organising over concerns that gamers wouldn't support them, and it clicked for me that corporate interests in the games would greatly enjoy having a bunch of unpaid pinkertons at hand

All HoYo needed to do was take away people's blorbos and suddenly the gamers did indeed rise up. The collective response to the VA strike from even supposedly "leftist" gamers was nothing short of disgusting.

Genuinely, my own personal experience with gamers had the majority of them (at least the ones I met and hung around) as way further left than the stereotypes would suggest. It's just that the ones who *aren't* are so much louder and transparently awful, because they want to make sure they're heard.

In elite even the pvpers, like straight up outright gankers, are starting to have a schism because so many people are sick of the 2015-era channers that are still hanging around Real "just because I play a villain in a video game doesn't mean I want to hang out with actual assholes" vibes

I'm not so sure, it seems like GamerGate predated the big push toward unionization by a number of years, and some of the initial PR response was actually to do things like contribute funds to Feminist Frequency (an early GamerGate target) hoping to soften criticism toward their own games.

I have always felt that "gamers" fall into two types of people. Sicko Wierdos (Positive) who play all kinds of games with plot lines that expand thier views. And their Ball and Gun Gamers, that may clock more hours than other groups but only play like 3 games.

Genuinely I can't see how you can actually be a right winger and a gamer without being paid a ton of money a la a ton of gaming influencers. Like trying to see what's happened to this industry in the past year or so and thinking how a republican would justify this and I am just drawing blanks...

Like maybe a game that just came out isn't gonna have a black character in it anymore or a game won't have gay romance options but like... is it really worth paying more for games/PCs/consoles, dealing with shitass AI generation in games, and nobody making games allowed to keep their jobs?

This clown dislikes “left wing politics”, bur probably also unironically proclaims “games are art” 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️ But as we know, the right can’t art, and they can’t stand that so many of the games they love have left wing thought baked right into the crust

I'm not unconvinced that if these guys just assumed that every time they hear someone bitching about something "left" or "woke" and assumed that 10x as many people were in support of it the whiners would just die out and life would get better for all of 'em.

"Is Gaming Woke??" The stupidest question ever posed since the Royal Game of Ur and consistently the answer is "Let people enjoy games" and "Fuck whatever you're on" is finally answered once and for all by republicans who don't play videogames. Yeah, sure, gamers will rise up, no problem there...

I really do think so. A lot of the communities I hang around aren't perfect, sure, but in my experience they've been more helpful than harmful. We just get happy when we complete objectives as teams or when new people join us. It's like what movies try to tell us fraternities are.

So. I wasn't online when 'gamergate' happened but every time someone explained it to me I was like... "wait... you all didn't notice the misogyny in the games industry before then?" and "this is news to people?" I grew up as a girl playing video games in the 90s...

Well, ok, a trans-boy in the 90s. And whilst video games were a core part of my socialising with lads and probably gender affirming it also led to a lot of awkward conversations about Lara Crofts tits and hidden shower scenes than I was prepared for.

I think I'm trying to say gamers aren't a monolith and some of that chud reputation is warranted. The communities around individual games and genres are pretty different despite this constant narrative it all (for) teenage lads.

Marty was a dick when we worked together on Destiny 1, but it seems he kept the apparent hateful shit to himself. It's so weird seeing the guy that gave my biracial queer spouse a tour of the studio is now this.
