I used to work in solid waste management , and I still tell people that this is the most accurate depiction of a solid waste incinerator ever put on film. They absolutely did their research on this and it has everything! Including the end where Lots-O Huggin Bear is tied on front of a trash truck

If I had to speculate, I would say it is set up as a waste-to-energy plant: thermal energy recovery with turbines and related apparatus that you don’t see. It would explain the white hot temperatures at the center of the maw of trash, along with the investment in magnets/sorters to capture metals

The part where they all come to terms with the fact that they are going to die and all they can do is comfort each other and be together in the end has to be the most adult thing in a children’s movie of all time

This scene destroyed me in a way nothing else from a kid's movie ever has. Worse than Bambi's mom; worse than the montage from Up.
