Lula winning is great for the planet, great for Brazil, and great for people who aren't revanchist assholes everywhere in the world, but let's not forget that it's also going to make some of the worst people on Earth extremely sad and mad. We should enjoy that, as a little treat.

"Those who put themselves above the law's reach are beyond the law's protection."

Corey Rayburn Yung@coreyryung.bsky.social

The generality principle of the Rule of Law is its most essential concept. A class of people outside criminal law is incompatible with a law-based society.

i can see an argument that at some point mass prosecutions of these guys might actually engender a backlash effect. i think you can just start with a peace deal with iran that involves turning over hegseth to them to answer for the children he killed and then going from there. it will have an effect

Contact lenses. I've been wearing them since the 80s, and it's amazing how much better and easier to manage they are

Social media loves talking about how everything is getting worse. But what’s something that you’ve seen get _better_ in your lifetime?

My parents used to go to the drive-in when I was little and I would sleep in the back seat. Also, I don't remember the first Disney animated movie I saw. But the first live-action movie was when I was 5, and my dad thought I'd be old enough to handle it: Star Wars.

Mark Thompson@markreckons.bsky.social

First film you saw at the cinema. The real first one, not the pretend one you tell people! Mine: The Empire Strikes Back, 1980, Wigan. We were near the front and I can still remember how massive the AT-ATs looked, looming over us out of the snow :) Film, year, where, and whatever stuck with you.

I am a huge disaster nerd (hi @nameshiv.bsky.social and @rahaeli.bsky.social) and my first obsession as a kid was the Titanic it really cannot be overstated how absolutely heroic the Carpathia was once they learned what had happened to the Titanic, this is worth your time

This one's maybe a little on the ling side, but trust me, it's worth it. I've cried reading it multiple times. (1/3)

It bears remembering that all the shit people (correctly) heap upon Schumer and Jeffries applies 100x over to GOP members of Congress. They could stop all of this at any moment

Heather Cox Richardson (TDPR)@hcrichardson.bsky.social

THEY ARE NOT POWERLESS TO STOP HIM! Go back to Washington, stand on the steps of the Capitol and demand Johnson and Thune recall the House and Senate, and impeach him. THIS IS HOW IT IS SUPPOSED TO WORK! THERE IS LITERALLY AN INSTRUCTION MANUAL! (It's called the Constitution.)

This is exactly right, and immeasurably sad

If you would try to win by abandoning trans people (or any targeted group) you can save this “we need to win” talk; there is no “we.” I am about solidarity, and you have chosen anti-solidarity. You are not any “we” I recognize. You are the enemy I’m trying to defeat. Beating you is how my “we” wins.

since California ballots are now out: prop 40 is the billionaire tax, and you should vote yes to stick it to them but both props 41 and 42 are designed to retroactively cancel the billionaire tax because they’re afraid they can’t beat it at the ballot box yes on 40, no on 41 and 42

Hoo boy. If there is one thing that makes lawyers close ranks, it's when someone who isn't in our club pretends to be. In California, what she did is a literal crime - a real lawyer might think, "Maybe I shut STFU instead of confessing on TV"

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com

Zacharia: "A lot of the misinformation, miscommunication is around the fact that I labeled myself a lawyer. I consulted for a long time many people in the field -- 'Is it ok if I label myself a lawyer?' -- and they said, 'Absolutely. You can call yourself a lawyer. You have a JD'"

If you recognize Kliger's name, it is probably in this context: he manually shut down life-saving aid from USAID. In between his DOGE work and starting his defense start-up he was appointed to the DOD as - brace yourselves - chief data officer. bsky.app/profile/donm...

I remember *exactly*. I was... 7? 8? My mom had just gotten a job and so I had an after-school sitter for the first time, who had three kids of her own around my age. I was just quietly playing outside, talking to myself and she asked "what are you doing," I said "playing with my imagination"

QUESTION OF THE DAY: This sounds like a joke question, but it isn’t. If it doesn’t apply to you, fine. But it’s a serious question with different levels of meaning. And I am genuinely curious. When did you first realize you were weird?

RIP to the longest-serving Republican Speaker, who had an uncanny knowledge about what the party's guiding principle was. Sadly, he won't be publicly acknowledged by the GOP as their guiding visionary, but if you look at what they stand for today, Hastert's outline and influence are unmistakable.
