Being asked about the "Portal 2 beta" is so bizarre... there was no beta, this never existed. This is like the "L4D Beta". Games are constantly being updated and worked on, we never stopped and shipped a beta or showed a beta, every single press event I ever did was a new build... It's just odd

My understanding of "beta" is that it largely comes from physical media where specific builds of a title would be burned to cartridge or disc for playtesting and marketing. It holds less weight now that most software is distributed digitally, but some teams still talk about alpha and beta phases.

I don't think there's a *widely accepted* formal definition, but I've heard one that the alpha milestone is when the game is first playable from start to finish (placeholders may remain / optional content not made) and the beta milestone is when all final assets are in place, only bugfixes remain

Sounds like a linguistic drift, because to me it sounds like they are asking about the pre-release versions of the game, but because betas have become so prevailent that is the word people use to describe all versions of pre-release now.

I appreciate people loving that world and characters. it was fun working on it. it was fun promoting it. It had one of my favorite moments on a bridge in Amsterdam with Erik laughing together as we finally realized where we were and what we were doing... But a beta? I have no idea....

Hope people had fun making it, have fun playing it, but is it accurate? I have no idea... I have no idea what it's supposed to be or what people think it is... I only say this because I think this is actually unhealthy in some ways, this idea that something was better when untouched but then ruined

the people who have strong interest in the "portal 2 beta" (like me) dont think it was better, its moreso an interest in how things took shape, its super interesting to learn about other potential ways the game could've gone, not because they're 'better', but out of love of the subject as a whole

as for what people mean by "portal 2 beta", its just an easy way talk about what the game would've looked like at certain snapshots in time, as opposed to any actual beta build

i think this largely falls under the broader issue of media illiteracy: many fail to distinguish between consuming a thing & understanding the thing, and fail to see that much of the allure of early ideas is they’re abstract thoughts unburdened by the specificity & functionality required to exist

I like hearing about unused and cut content but it's ridiculous to think there's some "better" version that existed at one point. I still treasure the email I sent valve back in college asking why L4D2 didn't have a flamethrower, and got an incredibly detailed response that boiled down to

"We tried so many things but couldn't find a way to make it fun for every player", and that's always stuck with me. I think it's door number 3 syndrome: The unknown in their imagination will never have any flaws so it'd obviously make things better, just like my imagined flamethrower.

Just that we were in Amsterdam promoting a game we made together... just with our heads down working it never really hit us - considering we first thought about making games at 18 in a rundown apartment and having no idea how that would ever happen...

I’m always cautious of the E3 demo effect. Devs are asked to consolidate for a demo, which means early finalization and a halt on actual progress. Valve being private likely meant they often didn’t have to waste such time.

I get the impression its like hl2 beta where there's a bunch of really cool old concept art that doesnt really make sense as a complete package (thus why it got changed over time) and anyone trying to make it will eventually figure that out, but modding is fun so perhaps its all worth it in the end

they're referring to a recently released project that aims to recreate a specific build from Portal 2's development - it's called Portal 2: Project 2009 it's really cool

I... i'm gonna be honest I don't know how to reply to people anymore... I say that and say how there is no such build but... And you aren't being a dick... but equally ignoring everything i posted and why i did just seems...

wait OHHHH, as in like, there literally isn't a build. not anything about classification, just there literally isn't a build sorry abt that :( i may be a bit stupid

I think most people who are into researching game development have shied away from using the term “beta” because it describes a very specific thing. That said: those intermediary prototype builds probably have interesting differences! The allure of “what could have been” lies in all media.

I think the term beta is often times used as an umbrella term for any publicly known early version of the game. With L4D's "beta' they are simply referring to the period of time when the game was going for a darker tone relative to what ended up releasing.

But you understand, that never existed right? it was a constant flow of shader changes, lighting changes, people with better understanding of the engine fixing bugs, size of map issues that broke the flashlight etc - there was no beta... there was always just the game.

Coming back hours later surprised I didn't mention *HL:A & Deadlock* as even MORE examples of people seeing the Valve dev process as entirely separated "eras." Rewriting the story while keeping almost all the level design intact feels like a massive "what could have been" moment for beta hunters lol

People are easily confused about this aspect of game dev maybe because it's talked about in other games often. TF2 went through so many distinctly different aesthetics that were scrapped. Ditto how people feel about the HL2 beta, like the projects were compartmentalized into eras of philosophy/style

- character limits really suck on here for big ideas like this, but I hope you understand the slack I'm attempting to give people. Love your work, Chet! I think folks assume too much about the process, but other commenter is correct that "beta" is just new slang for "cutting room floor" or scrapped
