Definitely someone who, in the aughts, was an important figure of representation in helping me recognize and overcome my own homophobic views. Would like to believe I've outgrown whatever he's on about these days.

Seattle had two old established daily broadsheets, and a much older weekly in the same niche but vastly stodgier. One way The Stranger was looser and irreverent was that it had a sex columnist, who became a nationally syndicated star: Dan Savage. Because he was a celebrity, he was named the Editor.

I still remember his talk at the University of Idaho, around 2007 or so. Someone asked him about being scared to come out. He replied that if you weren't out yet, you were a coward, a disgrace, and actively harming your community. I was 21 and not out. He's a toxic asshole. Always has been.

Never heard of him. Doesn't seem like I missed out.

Loved him ten years ago when I entered queer online spaces but eventually it became clear that he has some pretty abhorrent views. I do believe his columns were important for queers online, but nothing justifies looking beyond his own bigotry

That chapter also featured Dan Savage being disgusted that the fat! women! assumed he was attracted to them and completely missed that they were being remarkably polite to someone whom they reasonably assumed was a chaser being weird.

Dan Savage has always been The Worst, and it's a sad statement on the state of queer rights over the past twenty years that he was ever taken seriously
