On February 19, 1942, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed E.O. 9066, authorizing the forced relocation & incarceration of more than 125,000 Japanese Americans, solely because of their heritage.

As this Administration pushes policies rooted in hate and discrimination, we must learn from this shameful chapter in American history, defend immigrants' civil and human rights, and ensure these injustices are never repeated.

First impulse is Drumpf and DOJ are trying to sell us on this equal opportunity “look ma, token White family.” Cynical Black rolls her eyes.👀 Did Homan dump family in summer or ICE camp? OR did they get to stay home while immigration hitch gets fix? I don’t see kids’ lives disrupted. No fear either.

The average fearful immigrant has fled totalitarian states, to them fearing and worshipping the most evil man atop the pile is survival level action, for those who don't are kidnapped, slain and humiliated. This is a global issue. We need something far stronger than the UN and global in consensus.

More crap from you. Yes it happened. That’s was then; this is now. That was war time; now Is dealing with ILLEGALS that you and yours let over our borders. Say it again, out loud, repeat after me ILLEGALS

Isn’t that your job? How about helping organize the people to do just the things you mention by finding shared material & economic interests among the working people to turn these words into deeds & create new, permanent powerful institutions that can’t be swept aside by “Administrations”. *MD*

Within four decades of this atrocity the US apologized to the families and paid reparations to all of them. The US has never apologized to Black people for slavery, nor to Native Americans for genocide and has paid $0 in combined reparations to both groups.

And remember that Dean Cain (qv. Dean George Tanaka), whose grandparents were interned at the Minidoka War Relocation Center in Idaho during WWII, joined ICE so he could help intern a whole new generation of not-so-white people... because a pedophile pays him your tax dollars to do so.

Shameful! And now Latinos (even those on citizenship paths, actual citizens, families, children and babies, folks without any criminal records) are violently kidnapped from jobs, homes, hospitals, school areas and incarcerated in vile places like the cruel Dilley Center in Texas!

That’s a stain that we can never erase. One of, unfortunately, many. Too many of us let fear trigger our ancient animal instincts and go back to being “baboons with imagination”. We should learn the past so we can do better.

Many German-Americans and Italian-Americans were swept up at the same time. See the books 'Undue Process' by Arnold Krammer, 'Fear Itself' by Stephen Fox, 'Communazis' by Alexander Stephan and John Eric Schmitz's doctoral dissertation 'Enemies Among Us'. Proclamations 2526 & 2527 authorised this.

Although racism certainly played a huge role, at this point in time we had just been sneak attacked by the Japanese during Pearl Harbor, while the Germans hadn’t attacked us on our soil. Absolutely does not justify the atrocities we put on Japanese Americans, but context is important

The original authority to detain Japanese and Japanese-Americans was Presidential Proclamation 2525, issued on Dec 8th 1941. By Dec 11th, Los Angeles FBI alone had arrested 311 Japanese, 59 Germans and 10 Italians. The OP refers to a more general order, mandating mass relocation.

My mom's family was German-American, her grandparents were immigrants in the late 1800s. I remember asking about that and she said only a few who were Hilter supporters disappeared. She told me that her family tried to be very American versus German after WWI.

FDR's executive order rounding up the Japanese was definitely racially motivated. The bombing of Pearl Harbor not withstanding, Germans and Italians were rounded up because they were white.

German Americans WERE interned under the Alien Enemies Law during WWII, but mass incarceration was considered impractical for German and Italian Americans. You can look the whole sordid thing up if you want to.

My Mom and her siblings were treated like scum during WW2 because they were German/Americans. They were born here and couldn't even speak German but were called many derogatory names in school. I live in a town that had a WW2 POW camp that held Italians, Germans and Japanese soldiers for awhile.

We did pay a price … both during WWI and WWII. Americans turned their hatred towards the Kaiser & Hitler on German-Americans and there were a LOT of incidents of prejudice towards us. Some, during WWI, were caught up when Wilson activated Alien Enemies Act — my family included.

So here we are again! Stupid people don't learn from history. And we have a really stupid person in the White House, who is followed by a large group of really stupid supporters. Some day, God willing, this Administration will face real justice for the crimes that they are perpetrating on America.

Even great people are guilty of doing or saying evil. Teddy Roosevelt(FDR's uncle) once said the racist "The only good Indian is a 'dead' Indian. Or, Winston Churchill saved U.K. from Fascist Germany while killing many during Freedom/Democracy/independence protests in India. Canada had camps too.

1/2 WWII saw Germany/Italy/Japan at war with Britain/US/Russia. US high ethnic German population were not interned in a camp. Japanese Americans were interned. It was an injustice to the families. The paranoia of Pearl Harbor bombing by Japan gripped US and hysteria of war fed a fear of espionage.

2/2 Drumpf has caused undue pain to the Latino families. A status “undocumented immigrant” is not criminal; it is civil procedure. Yet, innocent families have been torn apart, and even babies & children put in ICE camps. The struggles of Japanese, Blacks & Latinos will reverberate for generations.

This, and also Project Overcast and its overarching and more famous Operation Paperclip made sure we brought those Germans into our government

It wasn't just the Japanese but, our propagandised history taught in schools doesn't cover just how horrible it was.

Hitler did the same thing with 6 million Jews and gypsies. The US broight in Chinese as slave laborers. The UK tried to eliminate aboriginals in Australia through selective breeding. Israel is currently trying to wipe out Paestinians. My point is, this crap happens all the time throughout history.

A stain on his presidency and the U.S. Our hands have always been dirty. From the massacres of indigenous people, to using people as slaves, white men have been the downfall of humanity. Women enabled it, even though they were also treated like chattel. Past time to make changes. Now would be good.

The Japanese citizens lost their homes and businesses and suffered terribly. Even so, most Japanese men joined the US military and fought for the country that treated them so horribly. Yes, today’s “camps” are terrible as well. Our government is failing its people again.

FDR did the right thing..He protected American citizens..It's a shame the USA has so much bigotry in it's history..This is another of those ugly chapters..The fear, was of Japanese spies..of sabotage..That's one reason Pearl Harbor was so successful..Much like after 9/11..American Muslims,attacked..

There’s a big difference between now and the 40s. For one, the US was at war with Japan, so there were valid security reasons to hold them. There is no reason today.

A friend's father and mother were imprisoned as children for being Japanese. His father was a brilliant chemist and would not let anyone in the family be angry about their incarceration. He said they were fortunate to be in the US with an opportunity to be successful. I'm not sure I'd be so kind.

We have yet to learn from our hateful ways of the past and repeat these atrocities again today, CECOT and worse concentration camps here!

A timely reminder that even the most staunch liberals misstep and hurt America occasionally. Bill Clinton did it with his mass incarceration of black people crusade and of course NAFTA.

My friend was only couple months old when her father was taken, then her mother and her 3 sisters were taken to a camp. Her sister Mako Nakagawa wrote a book from her experience from a child’s view. The title: Child Prisoner in American Concentration Camps. Easy to read. With photos of the family

Fear.... Did you see Tuberville's campaign postcard...he is going to protect everyone from sharia law because they will over take America with a population of 4000 in the US. Absolutely crap but it works. Fear..

Do the repubs even realize that what they want is closer to Sharia law than what dems want? Control of women, religious rules for daily life, severe punishment for crimes. Sounds like the GOP to me.

I grew up in the bible belt 🤮. Until I moved to Cali and learned about Manzanar, I'd never heard of it. That's right. The internment wasn't in our history books. #ReleasetheEpsteinFilesNOW #PsychopathParasiteThiel #JailtheOrangePustule/BillionairesinCECOT #$ubprimeCourtReformsNOW

Let us never forget this shameful part of our history and resolve never to repeat it. My father lived in California and was ashamed that his town did so little to save neighbors that they knew were good citizens.

This was and is stain on our history. I also feel compelled to point out it was a mere 2 months after the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor and emotions were running high. Governments SHOULD NEVER BE RUN ON EMOTION. Yet here we are with our government being run by one guys FEELINGS!

Shame and an indelible stain on this country😭. History is bound to repeat itself - this time the madmen in charge are intentionally re-creating the dystopian nightmare!🤬

to all my Japanese brothers and sisters, I live in Washington and I know what happened on Bainbridge Island. I'm sorry I'm sorry people were afraid and ignorant and selfish and I'm sorry that people treated you the way they did.

What gets me is how in time we seemed to have learned better about human rights and stuff. Jimmy Carter brought the recognition of human rights front and center. Repubs and MAGA toil day and night to reverse this philosophy. Our ONLY life guarantee is an iron-clad recognition of human rights.
