For anyone not following the drama, there's been apparently a big development in ai math, along with some accusations of very bad behavior by OpenAI. But we don't have details yet. If I understand it, Buckmaster and Levent Alpoge made a big discovery on Navier-Stokes. Events go something like this:

This part is crazy. Every paragraph is worse than the last. Perhaps I was naive, but I didn't think OpenAI capable of being this dishonest.

I'm aware of Sam's reputation. I wasn't expecting his underlings to be as dishonest as him, but in hindsight that was a silly thing to believe.

For a long time, I didn't understand how he could still have any semblance of a career, especially after the stunts he pulled at YCombinator. And then it finally dawned on me: they all *want" this out of him. They think the ends of making a lot of money justify the means.

I’m pretty sure they are a little more than underlings at this point Remember OpenAI fired Sam and most of these people quit in mass to follow Sam

That assumes businesses and consumers are rational constructs. I think there is a lot of very good precedent that they are not—especially regarding consumer safety and whatever supposed impact its failure would have on said business.

The problem with dishonest people is they don't regret what they do until they get caught. It's not true guilt for what was done, it's the anxiety of being cut off from continuing. Up until then, they think they are being clever and winning harder than everyone else.

Has that stopped them from stealing peoples intellectual property before? Advertising that they were stealing studio ghibli’s intellectual property didnt stop people from using OpenAI. What makes this different or worse? Do people respect academics more than artists?

Ripping of artists is one thing, ripping of your customers is (maybe) another. But, the skepticism is fair, we’ve been able to accept a ton of bad behavior up till now.
