very much dislike openai's view that when results are obtained via processes involving sufficiently large proprietary RL models, the academic norm should be to leave all details of the process except the involvement of a proprietary model undisclosed and to leave most researchers involved unnamed

Why would Cornel West, a man who serves on the board of a far right education group with Christopher Rufo, do this?

Sludge@sludge.bsky.social

NEW: The group behind Cornel West's 2024 ballot push was wholly funded through Elon Musk's dark money network, according to Sludge's review of tax documents. readsludge.com/2026/10/26/m...

via @stathead.com, throughout 122 years of world series history there have been two games in which a team scored 10+ runs and allowed 3 or fewer hits. both were the brewers (tonight and 1982 game 1)

Machine learning has a history of people trying ideas and them not working due an unrelated bug in their code (before coding agents). Just thinking about how much of science was like this throughout history. Leaning towards the opinion that we've actually missed lots of low hanging fruit this way

We need more freedom. But like, not just the obvious political mailer kinds, but the freedom to be bored. To be inaccessible. To discover something without being recommended it. To make an ass of yourself before an audience of four people, rather than four million. That kind of freedom.

Teams to open a World Series at 3-0 are 25-0 in winning the series. But if you need a reason to stay locked in, consider Game 3 of the 2004 ALCS.

A pet peeve of mine is when people talk about accuracy but actually just show calibration, as in this graph. You could flip a coin for every market and also achieve perfect calibration. The grey x-axis histogram shows accuracy, and they're ~only accurate for econ. www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/...

and then every other owner used it as blackmail for their own stadiums and then Huizenga managed to veto the Giants moving in '92 because he was getting the Marlins and then it turned out Bud Selig promised them an expansion team in '93 and didn't deliver which is why they got a team in '98

I'd like to remind everyone that the Tampa Bay Rays exist because Jerry Reinsdorf had St. Pete convinced that if they built a stadium, the White Sox would move there in 1990 Jerry then went back to Chicago in 1988 and told them "give me New Comiskey or I'm moving the team" and the city blinked

a better question is why does the government need to regulate who is allowed to use what filters? insanity

States may disagree on what does and does not constitute what the Meta settlement agreement describes as a "cosmetic procedure filter," EFF’s @davidgreene.bsky.social told @npr.org. "What if one state finds ... eyebrow lifting to be completely acceptable and another one thinks it's awful?"

you know how many webpages have, like, live credentials or links to 'internal' webpages or secret API endpoints or other strange things that probably shouldn't be there just in plaintext in the HTML source, commented out? ever just build a spider to look for them? it's kinda illustrative/scary

the whole world of bits is cheating at Zork. the proposed marriage of the world of bits and the world of atoms makes cheating at Zork the one thing that matters. you probably don't actually want that, lest your frobozz be xyzzyed.

The persecution of @repilhan.bsky.social just days before an election is vile and politically-motivated. I'm leading 175 House Democrats in denouncing this. When we retake power, we have to seriously look at how we can stop these abuses of power — starting with the power of the purse.

Putting Chekov in perspective, imagine if Star Trek: Enterprise, which premiered right after 9/11, had introduced a Muslim officer in its second season. Typical with Trek of this era, Enterprise would address 9/11 only through metaphor.

Stephen Robinson@playtyperguy.com

In Star Trek, Chekov represented a future where the U.S. & Russia were allies (though the TOS Earth was clearly not one government, as Kirk would often mock Chekov's biased Russian history). In TNG, Worf represents a future where the Federation & Klingons are allies. It's less overtly political.

I had Argon make this 53s video on Turek using archival footage snippets, for the following reasons: 1) It's important to understand the capabilities available to lab insiders using limiters-off frontier LLMs 2) In hopes of turning his anti-trans ad into a clear liability, pour encourager les autres

Gail Simone@gailsimone.bsky.social

I just found out about Walter Koenig, weird that Star Trek TOS was already on my mind. I know he was brought on to ST to 'appeal to kids,' and for me, it worked, he was my favorite character on the show for a long time. Very sad news.

consider that the term "Easter egg" for hidden surprises in software, put there for people to find, was still years away in 1973, but the practice of hiding Easter eggs was very much alive, and in fact goes back to the beginning (unfortunately some Easter eggs were just excuses to be nasty)

codehappy lives!@codehappy.bsky.social

unfortunately, TREK73 (1973), an early (unofficial, fan-made) 'Star Trek' game for mainframe computer at the start you were asked to specify sex; if you typed 'M' you would be addressed "SIR", if you typed 'F' you would be addressed "MISS", you could give any other character and get a random slur

but you should be making words for new things. you should be recognizing and doing things there aren't yet words for. if you aren't, what are you doing? "is there anything new under the sun?" legibility to others is increasingly unimportant/cheap, remember. "the right ones will get it."
