Getting a job in games media seemed almost unattainable when I broke in back in 2005. In the years since, it’s become almost impossible and ultimately inadvisable. I can’t imagine trying to break in today. Independent is pretty much the only option now. Support your favorite creators directly.

You're right, Dan, and it's deeply cruel. Over the years, you became one of my favorite people in Giant Bomb, and you'll continue to be part of its heart and have my supportvlong after its just a stripped down shadow. We had so many good times, and recent things felt like the best of old times. 💜

Dan, been a fan since your first tour at GB. Met you and Jeff at Anime Expo for that Crunchyroll event, which was hilarious. If you are ever back in the Johnson County area, I’ll buy you a beer or some Joe’s BBQ.

I think that applies to all kinds of journalism nowadays... Next thing you know, the big outlets will lay off almost all writers and whoever left will just feed an LLM with whatever marketing pitch they're given

my biggest worry going forward is when there are too many independent people than the people with open wallets can support, something has gotta shift and change. i'm already stretched thin with the price of everything going up

Directly supporting a select few personalities is providing more support than the ad revenue you generated by viewing every article/video/clip from every person you follow that was employed through a corporation. Don't feel like you have to do it all, take a set amount and rotate it every so often!

Dan, I’ve been keeping up with your work since the Overblood days. The stuff that is led by you is always the most fun. I love that weird era of “high” production twitch streams you did. If you end up with any kind of Patreon thing, I’m in. Wishing you the best!

I’m so sorry, Dan. I’m heartbroken. Despite becoming actual friends in recent years, you have remained a personal hero of mine. I’m heartbroken for you, but I’m confident you’ll have so much support in whatever path you carve next. Thank you for all you’ve done, and for your blatant kindness

Because of Giant Bomb, I got to shout at you in the lobby of the SiriusXM building years ago. I’ll always be a fan of your work and everyone else who built GB. C suite morons run the game in this country. The good times are over.

Already got you with Fire Escape. Hope you and the others figure out a way to keep doing things together, even if it isn't a daily thing. You all had the best chemistry together on camera. GB was the best, and you all deserved better. Gonna miss it.

Until something starts happening to these executives and CEOs making these decisions, this will continue to happen. Even though cases would likely be thrown out, the hassle and stress of everybody being laid off suing the hell out of these executives for poor job performance would be funny.

See how Youseff likes it when he has to spend every day in court explaining why he did what he did. Whether he wins or not, that stress will take its toll and perhaps future executives will take note. Until they are punished for these moves, they'll CONTINUE to ruin everybody's lives.

I used to dream of a job in the games media industry. Now I see I’m ultimately fortunate that didn’t pan out, as I wouldn’t have the constitution to survive being dragged through all the bullshit it would have required. Much love for all your work over the years.

already a patron of various side projects, but if yall launch something form the ashes of this a lot of us will be there to chuck money at you on a monthly/annual basis

I'm just making my rounds to the GB crew to say how important and formative it has been for me for my entire adult life. You will always be a part of that for me. Thank you. Also I need to find a way to squeeze fire escape back into my podcast rotation again dammit.

Its crazy to think that video game magazines would be the most stable and open era that games journalism would ever have.

Love you Dan (and everyone else at Giant Bomb over all the years). I’ve been a fan since 2008 and will forever continue to be one. Look forward to whatever is next for you and everyone else.

I tried to get in a decade ago and it was nothing but “you get paid in exposure” bullshit (even from some bigger places people would probably be surprised to hear named) so I noped the fuck out. I’d genuinely call anyone trying to get into it now insane.
