D&D is founded on flexibility and adaptability, so it's odd when people insist it can only be one thing. I'm sure when Dark Sun came out, there were people who complained it wasn't true to the spirit of D&D and wondered why everything was psionics nowadays, no wonder they were losing money

feels like d&d is so scared of offense it became offensive. your level 10 party has killed hundreds of sentient beings but sure let's pretend it's a saturday morning cartoon. technically detailed but emotionally flat as airport art. representation shouldn't look like a focus group result

A player in my table started complaining about the "gay Beholder" and I told him there is basically a gay beholder in Out of the Abyss (or at least I roleplayed it that way) and I proceeded to have the queerest vampire session I could. He also commented that someone made WH40k space marine shoot

You may want to look who was running TSR then. It wasn’t Gary, as he lost most (if not all) to his ex wife. Im sure you had some good discussions with him in his later years as well. We met a number of times at cons and dinners. Very different for sure than earlier days.
