Man, I just spent all day yesterday tinkering with Linux runners trying to get Affinity to work. If they transition this to a subscription web app it's going to turn me into the meanest person on the planet for the next 24hrs.

i hope it's a pause before selling v3 and people won't get annoyed because they *just* bought v2 both canva and affinity stated they would always offer affinity as a one time purchase

god dammit, i was just talking about this with someone the other day. i've been waiting for the other shoe to drop since they got bought by canva, cuz there's just no way a big subscription-only company is going to acquire a permanent license product and keep it that way

If this is *not* the other shoe dropping from the Canva purchase, I will be pleasantly surprised. Unfortunately, what I actually expect is a subscription model for new versions. Sigh. At least the existing versions of Affinity are very current, so it's better than trying to stay with old Adobe.

i really hope it's just an announcement of v3 and nothing else because anything else would effectively just kill that company :/

not that i trust anyone at canva to have any business sense but i really dont know what you get outta acquiring affinity only to basically shut it down? idk glad i have all my v2 stuff i guess

ways i could imagine this working are: - it's an aqui-hire (unlikely in the year 2025) - it's a tech transfer and they're going to roll or all of the things these apps can do into canva

since they were acquired by Canva last year, everyone's been waiting for the inevitable switch over to subscriptions instead of lifetime licenses, so there's concern that this may be that shift. and probably some ai bullshit too

Subscriptions = Enshittification. If they go that route, then this is the last version of the program I will ever own. I came to them to avoid Adobe and their monthly subscription bullshit. I enjoyed the hell out of them for the three or four years I have used them. Nothing good lasts.
