I don't know much about Pandora but Benn Jordan seems to suggest their payouts are extremely low, down in the gutter with Spotify and Regular YouTube (I think YouTube Music might pay more than Regular YouTube)

Hey so if you still use Spotify: Streaming services are bad for artists but have you noticed yours is *the worst*?? Their rates are consistently under everyone AND for 85% of the music on the platform they don't pay out at all. Tidal, Deezer, Napster, Apple pay 2-3 times as much. Qobuz is like 4x.

The Los Campesinos post doesn't break out Deezer. However, multiple analyses I have seen elsewhere put Deezer roughly equal to Tidal.

This was a brilliant and informative post. Thank you so much! I'm switching to Tidal ASAP. And BTW, love "Here's to the Fourth Time!" -- had to have rung in maybe 5 quid for ya on that alone! More coming your way! Thanks for the music--you deserve more reward for the art.

Spotify has to go. Not only because they suck for any number of reasons, but if artists and fans could actually show that they have the power to take down a major streamer by refusing to support it, it would make the others step up in terms of how they run their business.

I rarely stream music. In the old days I bought records, then cassettes, and then I bought the CDs that were supposed to last forever…remember that sales pitch? I am back to buying vinyl records if I want a physical copy, I don’t need a “service”… I do use YT for exploring, but yah…I’m a bit jaded.

They link how to do that at the bottom of the post… I think buying music from artists is infinitely better to any streaming service, but if people choose to use streaming services, the most important thing is to get off Spotify

I but the CDs when I see the artist, especially locally if it is a band I listen to on a regular basis. That way I can use it in my car, CD player, or AIFF on Mac.

This is actually no longer necessarily true on Spotify. Spotify now pays no royalties *at all* for a huge proportion of music on the platform, each individual *song* has to qualify for royalties before any payout. One band I know actually ended a year with Spotify claiming *they* owed Spotify money.

My assumption for why bands are on Spotify is inertia— there was a time when the proposition kinda made sense, but it does not make sense now. Some bands are pulling out already.

I tried to use Tidal for six months... Paid for a family plan. No Alexa integration in the UK, poor Android app reliability, no crossfade, no buffering/caching (compared to Spotify). Miserable existence. I tried 😢

tidal.com is a service basically identical to spotify, except with better audio quality, better artist payouts, and worse IOT-device support. There are also small services Deezer and Qobuz which I know less about but also pay higher rates. (I find contradictory information about Apple/Amazon rates)

Los Campesinos lump all the smaller services, I assume including Qobuz, together into an "Other" category. Other independent analyses I've seen frequently have Qobuz paying more than anyone else. Benn Jordan's numbers have Qobuz paying almost twice what Tidal does.

Unfortunately now the largest shareholder is Jack Dorsey lol (10% stake) Qobuz and Deezer (both from France) are also two independent services with high artist payouts (Deezer's is about the same as Tidal's, and Qobuz is about 2x that)

Benn Jordan's analysis from the start of this year showed them pretty high, between the (lower than Amazon) Deezer/Tidal tier and the (higher than Amazon) Qobuz tier. I remember struggling to verify Jordan's numbers with other sources.

I believe Jordan has a new analysis this month, and there are several other studies or articles you'll find if you search giving numbers. (Not looking myself, busy today.) But it appears if you can stomach the unusually odd interface, Amazon is high tier among streaming services on payouts.

I don't have any music on spotify so no. I think artists removing their music from Spotify would be a good decision at this point. Many of them are no longer being paid at all.
