I’m up before dawn for travel, which means I can bug the lunchtime UK crowd: Do I know any game nerds with interests in 18th century (1660-1835) within shouting distance of Oxford (or willing to be for purposes of talking about their work for/with 18th century scholars?)

i mean what do you classify as "within shouting distance" because i live in the next county over? i've been writing a game about the scottish highland droving trade in the 18th / 19th Century, with a smattering of highly unprofessional research throughout.

How ever did you get on that topic? And have you read Chatwin's On the Black Hill? It's set in Wales, not Scotland, and it's not specifically droving — I mean, okay, I guess it's not really related at all, fine — but it's a beautiful novel of British pastoralism and the invasion of the 20th century.

a very very long time ago i heard a radio programme about the droving trade and it was something i had never heard about. i found it really fascinating, how this entire trade had basically evaporated despite being incredibly important to the economy of the north in particular.

imagining huge numbers of cows walking across the landscape with just these hardy drovers to guide them and harry them along is something i found such an extraordinary idea, i couldn't get it out of my head. it must have been nearly ten years ago now, my partner refers to it as my bizarre obsession.

1. That game sounds fascinating 2. This is (hypothetically) for an academic conference in Oxford right after new year. I’d be schlepping myself over, but I understand that folks might not want to travel far pro bono to sit in a room with some professors and such. (Some do!)

first, thank you! it's been a very long labour of love, the main products still aren't properly down on paper. second, that sounds like it would be really cool to do, depending on the logistic details!
