I am determined to prove that you can be largely anti-AI but also not be an asshole. The attitudes of some people on this site will NOT win over any minds or win you over any favours. If you insult someone, you are doing it to a real person. And it sucks!

I despise AI companies and their goals. I am deeply passionate about climate action, and I weigh any positives that AI can bring against the critical need for us to save our planet right now. I am passionate about music and art, and I do not want it gone forever. But I am also not a dick about it!

I think that the fringes of the anti-AI movement have lost all context about how widespread these tools already are in society. The cat is already out of the bag. I see it every day with my students, fellow educators, or friends in software engineering.

We need to work on tight regulations, laws that protect human work, protecting living standards, and continuing to fight the climate crisis. But AI in coding will never go away at this point, like how LLMs applied to machine translation have been doing just fine for ~10 years on sites like DeepL.

Pretending otherwise is futile and is wasting the extremely limited time we have to save our planet and our society at the same time. I do not think that abolitionism will get us anywhere.

appreciate your levelheaded and nuanced perspective on this, and i’m pretty confident we’re aligned on wanting/demanding regulation and radical change in the energy supply side and in other areas

It's also hard to criticize ALL uses of AI while we use Bluesky, whose software engineers make extensive use of AI tools. Although it seems that people who use a lot of AI assistance see their skills degrading over time. As a senior citizen, I need to keep up my cognitive skills, so no AI for me.

I've seen Deepl quality go down sharply in the last 2 years. May be caused by LLMs or not of course, correlation is not causation etc. Still, worse product now for me.
