Joyless scolds aren’t new. They dont have a point. They will always show up when somebody is having fun so they can take that away. It’s a weird antisocial behavior and we shouldn’t give them the w

People who aren’t using AI to code at this point are delusional or lying, trying to ride a horse down the highway and backing up the traffic instead of asking “what can we do to make cars safer and electric.” They have no ethical high ground

the maintainers of two very popular image libraries used by this very service's CDN recently went from a permissive AI code policy to one disallowing it entirely, citing increased review load, legal issues, and added development costs

how should this, ideally, be dealt with then? i've been following another project that has had a popular feature request open for a while, with the vast majority of proposed solutions/PRs being untested AI-generated code that only stubs what's needed and doesn't actually solve the problem

I've been toying with the idea of a "PRs to specs" only policy. That improves the clarity of the contributions, and gives the maintainers the ability to produce and test the update themselves

Using spec driven stuff works very well yes. It has spec driven design systems in crosslink for example. Like it has its own spec templates.

That is one thing that AI tools have really helped my personal development skills - they're (at least the good ones anyway) obsessed with things like writing exacting spec documents and comprehensive unit tests. Things that are objectively quite good to have but I never had time for before.

maintainers end up rewriting half the PRs anyway just to fit project conventions -- spec-only PRs make that explicit and save everyone time. we’re hosting a talk series on this in Q4 (Engineering Unscripted) and would love to have you share your thoughts: bsky.app/profile/josh...
