🚨 China just became the first country in history to surpass 4 TW of installed electricity capacity. • 4.01 TW total capacity • 62% non-fossil • 61% renewable • ~1.5% nuclear • 32% coal (down from 61% in 2010) China's electricity system is now roughly 1.7× larger than the US and EU combined.

Chinese coal power has been growing since 2010. Percentage does not save the climate here. They are increasing there capacity in all possible ways to keep their industry running at a cheaper cost than we can do in the west and therefore they are still building a lot of coal plants.

+1 on sustainable energy, but I'd argue glasswing's Mythos did not differ much from Opus (in terms of cybersecurity) or whatnot.

I’m not qualified to assess the technologies but: “China views Anthropic’s Mythos model as a strategic "cyber nuclear weapon" capable of unprecedented software vulnerability discovery. Beijing fears "one-way transparency"—meaning the U.S. could exploit these tools to scan global infrastructure...”

Politicians are very bad IT engineers :) And they often forget to ask experts. Also I'd imagine military people are usually very paranoid and consider low probability high impact risks still as existential. I used Opus for analysis, it revealed all the same stuff that people with glasswing reported

Numbers in the US & EU may be reported by the government. But they are also generated & reported by various independent scholars & groups. Not the case with China. It's why the US & EU couldn't get away with "ghost cities," or pretending they only lost a few thousand people to Covid, for example.

Meanwhile here in the US we’re dicking around canceling wind power and allowing data centers soak up as much electricity and water as possible Oh well

It is not communism in the purest sense. China calls it "Socialism with Chinese Characteristics", a state-led system that integrates Marxist-Leninist principles with a market-based economy. The ideology combines centralized political control, economic pragmatism, and deep patriotism. Complicated 😁

Whatever it is, there sure are a lot of sectors where they put the US to shame. And really- is "centralized political control" that much more odious than "oligarch controlled late stage capitalism"?

Consider this: The AI and their data centers are the last bulwark of the entire human power tradition based around control of energy. Solar is changing that faster than any prediction dares to dream of. That’s why the oligarchy is in panic mode. And all the wars tie into this.

Meanwhile, in the intellectually challenged United States of America we are paying $1 billion to get out of contracts to build clean energy because Trump is totally beholden to the petrol industry. This is why being an American sucks and no one is celebrating the 250th birthday of a fallen country.

While the rest of us fight about everything that bothers us in the hourly news cycle, china is becoming a monster in energy, military, electric cars with batteries that charge faster than you can pump gas that sell for 10k.

Before the "capacity isn't generation" replies arrive: here's the generation chart. Fossil fuels' share of China's electricity generation has fallen dramatically over the past two decades — from around 80% to below 60% — while coal's share of installed capacity has fallen from 61% to 32%.

Meanwhile, Trump and Republicans are doubling down on the h̶o̶r̶s̶e̶ ̶a̶n̶d̶ ̶b̶u̶g̶g̶y̶ oil and gas industry because it offers them and their donors short term revenues at the expense of their constituents and our planet.

Meanwhile, the orange pedophile, rapist, felon and his Secretary of the Interior and dopey suckup, Doug Burgum are pushing “clean” coal thinking that calling it clean will make it clean! Their stupidity is astounding!
