Fairly certain this claim (and I can guess where it came from) has been debunked now. Nobody is going to be stripping people of jewellery.

Ministers now appear to be confirming in broadcast interviews that they would audit and could confiscate assets (including jewellery) excepting wedding rings from the jewellery that they could confiscate.

This sounds like a very common phenomenon and not at all a cherry picked set of incredibly rare occurences being used to demonstrate thoughness.

If they are genuinely seeking asylum, why shouldn't they use their assets to fund the cost of their processing?

This is not a serious argument. If they have assets, they will sell them to make settling here possible without government help. But the aim here is to strip asylum seekers from the remnants of dignity, so they know that their place is at the very bottom of society. Performative cruelty.
