If I were emperor of the universe any candidate promising to balance the budget or fund expensive programs by "cutting inefficiency, waste and fraud in government" would be immediately slimed like a Nickelodean host.

Government institutions are beset by edicts and regulations to make them more efficient that themselves make them less efficient. There must be incentive devices other than government edict to make them more efficient.

Agree. I’m a retired UK public sector worker (NHS), I spent 40yr listening to people with no public sector experience telling us that we were inefficient. My experience of many (not all) private sector contractors made that claim completely laughable. Especially when it comes to customer service.

This! So many political children (Ministerial staff) arrived sure they would be heroes of efficiency only to discover the civil service was running the place on shoestring and precisely zero fat existed. The need to make hard and complex tradeoffs really disappointed them.

I remember when Hinchingbrook Hospital was handed to a private company. They lasted less than two years I think before handing back the keys and saying they couldn’t make it work.

Indeed. Had a bunch of bright-eyed KPMG folk once come in to confidently fix a project we knew needed to be cancelled. Obviously, civil servants must have missed something. They were less chipper 2 months later when admitting we were right all along.

Word. Any civil servant could tell you what a con this is. It’s been going on for decades, and the result has been to make things worse, not better. Been hearing ‘do more with less’ since the 80s, and now we just have less.

In my view there is no hustings that would not be improved by a gunk tank and a set of audience response buttons.

Someone saying that about government is like a candidate for the CEO job saying their big plan is "to cut expenses and increase profits". You know they are a fraud. There's zero sense to engage with them as if they know what they are talking about and are acting in good faith.

Rather than exactly balancing a budget, serious q: should one ever run a surplus? Or is the general idea to run a debt under the rate of inflation? Sorry if that's economically illiterate, am not an economist.

IMO, it is easier for the news media to report on IWF in the public sector ie, the US FOIA laws makes it easier journalists TO get information, whereas the private sector can hide IWF & gov't projects - Roads - tend to be visible & of course th right constantly promots this myth
