If you get why it’s bad when people feel *pressured* to attend sex parties and engage in other sexual behavior to advance professionally, then you understand the core problem with the rationalist AI Silicon Valley culture.

Honestly "cult" is probably generously downplaying the horror of an industry that has normalized the idea of boundary eroding sex parties attended by all the people who have control over your professional & financial future. 🤷🏻‍♀️

There’s absolutely nothing wrong with sex parties, kink, polyamory, paid sex work, or literally any other form of consensual sex IMO: it becomes wrong when those things get all mixed up in coercion, big money, power, and professional advancement.

Morally, I have zero issues with “do not kink shame” people should be free to live the lives that make them happy. On the other hand humans especially males are dangerously motivated to have sex and any decision that can be affected by “if I do this, I get sex” should be considered in that light

I'm going to say this again, Again bsky.app/profile/frog...

I will say, as a guy who was raised Mormon, it is definitely Interesting to me that some people can hear about the early Mormon practice of polygamy and (rightly) clock the Patriarchy Problems, but seemingly can't cross-apply the potential concerns to something more secular-coded.

When the sex cult becomes one of the most powerful forces in the world. It's time to break up the sex cult. That's too much sex culting

I thought Peter Thiel lead the cult and I'm pretty sure most people aren't gay so how does that whole thing work? Does he just watch from high above / from behind double sided mirrors or what

Recognizing this is a separate group of gross men who said it, the denigration of “HR Lady Politics” is really a reflection of how a lot of powerful people really don’t like guardrails around their work as a lifestyle/central purpose of their life. They want all of their feelings to derive from work

Mix that with deeply ingrained feelings of entitlement and, for some reason, the backing of the US government and economy, and it’s… not good. But I think it’s kind of ignored by the press and most people is… I dunno, I kind of think people are sympathetic to it. They don’t want guardrails either.

I mean media companies (I’m pretty sure) are made up of the worst kind of strivers and attention seekers who have no sense of boundaries and no interest in it either (maybe in a “boundaries for thee but not for me” kind of way) (also not an expert, just an observer, could be totally wrong)

But also, decades of eroding norms around work/life balance, especially in the highest powered industries and government, means this sex party environment is only a degree worse than those areas of life are, but not a difference in kind.

Just pointing out, if I didn't want people to treat their work as their lifestyle and central purpose of their life, I would simply pass labor laws that give people a lot more rights in the workplace and to job security.

And the conviction you have to save the world from destruction and have to commit everything to that goal, every mean necessary is permitted. A perfect cover for misconduct, if you talk, you a threat that could cause the world to end (eventually)

Feels extra fucked up to me that this comes out of a philosophical belief system, via which the ones doing the coercing justify it by saying that polyamory (etc) is not a personal choice, but the only correct and rational answer. So if you don't do it, you must not be smart enough for this career.

And this isn't just a belief system that the people with power happen to espouse, it's the entire foundation of the industry in which the victims are trying to build a career.

Exactly this- because once it becomes coercive, it's by nature no longer consensual. Since sex, in our culture, is so taboo, we often aren't taught how to navigate sexual situations. That makes it easier to keep a culture of shame and silence around it, and use it to control and exploit people.

Yeah, exactly. It’s an extension of that bro dude business mentality, where they have client meetings at strip clubs. “You don’t mind, right? You’re cool, aren’t you?”
