Victim blaming season is back, alongside darker evenings and mornings.
But perhaps it’s time to recognise that like “cities aren’t loud; cars are loud”, our roads aren’t dangerous by themselves. It’s the motor vehicles on them that create the danger and that perhaps it’s time to address the source.
Prince Maurice's grave is interesting, because it was a good example of the conflicting thoughts families had.
Princess Beatrice refused repatriation of the body. She felt he belonged with his men. But she fought for years for the right to spend her own money on a custom headstone. This was blocked
Remembering Prince Maurice of Battenberg, the youngest grandchild of Queen Victoria, who was killed in action on this day in 1914, aged just 23. In December 1918, his cousin, King George V, visited his grave to pay his respects.

"For unmarried women, these books will do nothing but give you unrealistic expectations for when you do get married."
I honestly thought there was some sort of Christian marriage rule that wives must never, ever say anything negative about their husbands in public.
My heart is heavy. Walter Koenig, our Ensign Pavel Chekov, passed away early today.
Walter and I met on the bridge of the Enterprise in the 1960s, and we stayed friends for nearly six decades. When Brad and I married in 2008, Walter stood beside us as our best man.
I noticed in the supermarket the other day that chocolate bars are going big on sparkles and whole spices and crunchy bits and pieces. I don't know how much is "offering novel consumer experiences" and how much is "cutting costs by reducing how much chocolate goes into the chocolate".
Taiwan election tidbits: At the big Keelung rally, very politically savvy of DPP mayoral candidate Puma Shen to mention his wife used to live in Keelung, he talked about her commute between Taipei and Keelung and the crowd was really into it.
Love the giant cat in the harbor behind them.
Delighted to post this @privateeyenews.bsky.social#cartoon as our planet's lungs breathe a sigh of relief... #Lula#Bolsonaro#Brazil#election#amazon#environment
Kinda fascinated by this sort of thing. Like the full all-star cast Harry Potter audible books, which I presume did well?
Are we re-inventing the radio play?
no society or human culture can exist without the regular practice of “they went out again, mildly against their will, to the lodge or some church committee”
Thirty years ago I was on a high-volume high-aggro mailing list, and when someone lost it like this the tradition was for someone to take the text of the message, alphabetize it, paste it into a reply, and say “these words didn’t appear to be in any particular order so I alphabetized them for you”
Lula winning is great for the planet, great for Brazil, and great for people who aren't revanchist assholes everywhere in the world, but let's not forget that it's also going to make some of the worst people on Earth extremely sad and mad. We should enjoy that, as a little treat.
So how did Lula come from behind to defeat Bolsonaro?
In short, turnout.
Bolsonaro's vote share barely moved. But Lula banked millions of votes from those who didn't vote in the first round & won eliminated candidates' votes.
A remarkable mobilisation. Second round turnout is usually below first.
WE DID IT. I CANT FUCKING BELIEVED WE DEFEATED USA WE DEFEATED A COUP WE DEFEATED META WE DEFEATED EVERYONE WHO TRIED TO SILENCE BRAZILIA PEOPLE
LULA WON GUYS. THE PEOPLE WON.
And again, it's worth noting that this happened despite Lula being an incredibly flawed candidate. His son and some of his key political allies are embroiled in genuine corruption scandals. He's 80 years old. Crime is incredibly high.
But he's won despite those flaws. There's a lesson in that.
Brazil’s results tonight are a big endorsement for the idea that every country should have a second “are you you sure about that” election a couple weeks after the first one for the important stuff
Today's the feast of St Crispin and St Crispinian, traditionally 3rd Century Roman twins who were martyred under Diocletian. They're the patron saints of cobblers and leather workers, and here they are busy at work in a roundel of collected continental glass now in Kings College Chapel, Cambridge.

A banner of the Duns Shoemakers Society, 1832, celebrating the passing of the Great Reform Act, with a pleasing pun in the final sentence. People's History Museum, Manchester.
Final day of Howloween… I’m sold out of a few things, like the Homecoming print and a couple pins, and some more stuff like specific stickers are running low. I’ve also got five remaining original pieces.
Sensory overload is weird and inexplicable. I can happily spend 3 hours in a mosh pit provided the T-shirt I got at the merch stall doesn't have a scratchy tag.
"This could have been an email." Aragorn whispers.
"He ALWAYS pulls this shit in 'Any Other Business" Boromir replies, quietly. "It's why Faramir marked himself as busy when the invite went out."
Elrond tells the long story of the One Ring, from its forging in the Mountain of Fire, to its betrayal of Isildur at the Gladden Fields. Frodo is startled to learn that Elrond himself marched with Gil-Galad in the Last Alliance against Sauron, more than three thousand years ago.
The fun of being an old person at a metal concert...
Younger friend: oh look, someone crowd-surfing!
Me: I once chipped my collarbone doing that.
YF: when?
Me: oh...[quick calculation]...about 30 years ago.
YF: [visibly shaken]
I was so proud of myself today. Changed the oven, microwave and rice cooker without having to look anything up. (And the kitchen clock but that's just a little wheel on the back.)
