A company called "Frontier Valley" has declared it will build a new Network State zone on federal land in Alameda, California. Below: A "draft" presidential executive order that would have Trump declare a "national security emergency" to permit the project. PR stunt, or aggressive new phase?

Has there been any psychological examination or sociological examination of these “Networked State” enthusiasts? Everything I’ve read about them suggests they are mentally ill. But I am not a mental health professional. They remind me of “flat earth” enthusiasts. They ignore history and science.

Why did they choose THAT guy to do the video? Is that a face I should know? His shirt and jacket don't fit & his delivery and hand movements are annoying as hell. "Love" the complete independent governance from the Bay area and, yes, even the state of CA. What's Gov. Newsom's position on this idea?

they’re going to use them at least in part to host corporate-run megaprison slave labor camps that they will be forbidden by charter from regulating in any way. these in combination with a massive expansion of child labor are meant to form the backbone of the new post-migrant economy

Good grief. I checked the site out and watched a few mins of the video. With such bad editing I didn't know if he was AI or not but he comes off as a Ponzi salesman at a Las Vegas convention for 'you too can get rich with investing $5k today' vibe, except with an even worse unfitted polyester suit.

Umm, maybe should just let the idiots try it. I don’t think they know that it’s crappy landfill that floods during king tides. I don’t think data centers work that well when all soggy.

I like this formulation. An ex of mine was a squatter in the 1970s in properties that had been abandoned. Scrappy young people fixed up places and got contracts on the basis of meticulous improvements. The network state guys are the opposite. They are creepy freeloaders. We see the difference!

Their information source is out of date. Most of the land was transferred to the city of Alameda over a decade ago, with a big chunk (that contains the Tern refuge) now owned by the VA. Sure go ahead and steal the future location of a VA hospital and national cemetery. Optics are great!

I don't work on the editorial side - I have no influence over which stories we pick up / what we investigate. But it's an interesting idea that I can forward to the newsroom for their consideration.

Yes, please! The agenda of Silicon Valley broligarchs is one of our top three longer-running story arcs, along with Project 2025 and [pick your fave dystopian trend]. Network states are core to their antisocial, anti-American priorities.

Fine, but they are not allowed to use public roads or rail to ship supplies. They are not allowed to use electricity, water, sewage, or similar resources developed with public money. Every single one of these attempts has failed miserably in the past. Example: www.theguardian.com/news/2021/se...

theguardian.comThe disastrous voyage of Satoshi, the world’s first cryptocurrency cruise shipThe long read: Last year, three cryptocurrency enthusiasts bought a cruise ship. They named it the Satoshi, and dreamed of starting a floating libertarian utopia. It didn’t work out

The Guardian article confirmed by opinion that Libertarians are basically adolescents who never matured psychologically to adulthood. They think they can make science fiction fantasy real.

It's not that you can't make science fiction real, but making science fiction real requires working together, and they can't. They especially can't work together with those who do the supportive work to make society function. That's why they want robots and AI, the rest of us told them to fuck off.

I agree with you that they have difficulty working with other people. What I meant about science fiction is you can’t plan on escaping the constraints of the laws of physics such as the first and second laws of thermodynamics.

Will this allow billionaires to be government sanctioned “Sovereign Citizens “ and avoid all taxes after they pay a membership fee? What other laws will be warped to benefit the oligarchs?

This would have a better chance of getting OK’ed if they added “and besides, the bitchin’ freeway chase scene from The Matrix Reloaded was filmed there!” to the “Site Suitability” section.

Like the nearby 'California Forever' in Solano County? "The company spent years buying up farmland before suddenly announcing a plan to incorporate a new city east of Travis Air Force Base. The company pulled its planned ballot measure in 2024" www.kcra.com/article/cali...

That would be the second such new "community". Fine. It's fed land. That means not one dime of CA money should be used for sewers, utilities, roads, anything. If it plans to pay nothing to the state and county in taxes, they will have to find some $$ to do it on their own.

Most likely why Noem wants to "liberate" California of it's democratic leadership and why they had ICE act so aggressively in California first. That big ugly bill has enough in it to get them started...tax cuts for the techbros, the sale of our public lands and no state regulation of AI for 10 years

The careers page is quite telling: numerous Officer and Manager positions, and just one Full Stack Developer expected to handle both design and CI/CD. That says a lot about the people behind it.
