One old trick in politics is to oppose something possible while calling for something impossible. Example: Here's Gavin Newsom leading the charge for a "national billionaires tax" while he and his paid goons work to kill a state billionaire tax. This allows him to be on both sides for 2028.

Low-information Democrats will lap this up. "Wow, Gavin fights the billionaires!" In reality, Gavin is previewing his 2028 strategy: fake populist-talking billionaire tool. (Don't worry, billionaires: President Gavin would never actually push a national billionaire tax)

On the flip side, a creative political brain could exploit this two-faced confusion to push the state billionaire tax. "Even Gov. Gavin Newsom supports a billionaire tax..." Let them fact check the straddle.

“Gavin’s for a billionaire’s tax…but not THAT way” Easy way to be for something without ever having to follow through and implement a policy. There will always be something that’s a dealbreaker.

And Thiel moved to Argentina. They're billionaires, they all have multiple properties worldwide, & they're well-enmeshed with oligarchs in Saudi and Russia and Europe and Asia and wherever else. Point is: The Gav could do something tangible for California, & is siding with his rich friends instead.

It's astonishing that people don't realize that the same arguments being made by Newsom about why CA can't do the tax will be made on the national level, if anyone ever gets close to a federal tax. They will obviously say I'm leaving the country, not just CA.

1000%. It should be obvious to anyone who thinks it through for a moment, but so much of American culture -- including but also beyond politics -- is based on wishcasting & selective updating. For those of us who've watched Newsom's rise from the beginning, the only debate is how fast he'll flip.

The reason why Newsom is against the tax in CA is because he's buddies with the rich people who are bitching about it. The reason why Newsom will never actually support -- even though he's lying here to trick idiotic voters -- a national tax is bc he's buddies with all of those same rich people.

He is worried that billionaires will move out of the state and that will result in lower state tax revenue for California. If there’s a national billionaire tax, they can’t move out of state to avoid paying it.

CA's progressive income tax revenue system has top 5%(earning over 200k annually) responsible for aprox. 70% of CA state income tax revenue funding 40-50% of CA yearly budget. I can see why arguments can be made pro/con the B tax... Time to reimplement a national progressive tax based on net worth

Precisely, and if a state wealth tax is such a great idea why is there no movement in the other 49 states? California has the highest tax in the nation but it's California being attacked, not the 49 lower states.

Do billionaires who live in CA, do they really contribute to CA GDP? The only thing I can think is that he fears billionaires would leave CA. If there was a national billionaires tax, then wherever they move in the US, they would be taxed.

Then the excuse will be that they'll move out of the county. Billionaires are always promising to leave California but rarely do.

Do you want to raises taxes permanently or are you happy virtue signaling how much you hate billionaires? Wealth taxes are hard to collect. State wealth taxes even harder. And you are taking your eye off the prize, which is blue sweeps to take down Trump. Newsom is not the target. Trump is.
