As Marvel writer you'll probably appreciate: As part of seeing what it gets wrong, I asked ChatGPT to create a Handbook style profile on Forbush Man; in his history it claimed that he crossed dimensions and met the Inferior 5 which sounded plausible as an intercompany crossover but didn't happen.
I mean, you recognize the problem is marketing and business.
LLMs are a technology. And machine learning is a technological breakthrough. Facebook is written in the programming language PHP, it's like looking at Facebook scandals like Cambridge Analytica and saying we need to ban PHP.
I hear what you're saying, Mike, and I think we agree on a lot -- as I note in the post, these repugnant companies are marketing knives as if they're teddy bears. But I still say ban it all from consumer-facing products. PHP doesn't tell kids to kill themselves, for example. LLMs do!
I think we mostly agree, it's a question of terminology. "Consumer-facing" is more important than LLM. An LLM doesn't tell someone to harm themselves. It's the chatbot that does that. (Facebook circa 2016 didn't have any LLMs but had similar negative societal consequences.)
We must negate the machines-that-think. Humans must set their own guidelines. This is not something machines can do. Reasoning depends upon programming, not on hardware, and we are the ultimate program! Our Jihad is a "dump program." We dump the things which destroy us as humans!
Thanks for publishing this on your site, Greg (and for all the threads that have preceded it). I find the cogent, concise articulations of your (and, incidentally, my own) positions helpful and validating. Conceiving of myself as an abolitionist in this area is clarifying my thinking; thank you.
Amen to all of this.
Our CEO has been pushing this HARD for years now, But I'm the one in my department who has planted my feet and absolutely refuses to "find a use for it" in my workflow. I have no interest in de-skilling myself. I'm John Henry in this fight and I'm not putting down my hammer.
I've heard people say: "I use it to write emails." Buddy, if you need it to write emails, you shouldn't have that job - or maybe any job - in the first place. That is literally the lowest bar to clear.
It is apparently acceptable in California to allow ChatGPT to write your clinical notes in mental health services. You are expected to review them of course. Fuck that shit.
