Years ago, a friend asked me why billionaires want MORE money when they could never spend the tiniest fraction of what they have. My answer is that they want immunity. The immunity to do literally any horrific they want without consequence. Nothing I've seen since has changed my mind.

Definitely the largest part of their greed. I would add that it's a side effect of wealth itself too. Once you get more than you need to be comfortable, it's never enough. Extreme wealth is a disease and should be treated as such. It's a disease of society and individual pathology.

The real answer is that capitalism forces the bourgeoisie to compete against each other for market share, and they have to chase profits more and more frantically because of the tendency for the rate of profit to fall over time. They already have immunity. The whole system was made for them.

More money in the United States translates into greater potential political power. What the superrich almost never speak about very candidly in public is that they eventually become obsessed with gaining more power and influence. It's not about the money itself: soundcloud.com/paquito-dela...

That obscene wealth ensures them immunity. That's exactly why billionaires must be taxed out of existence. Allowing anyone that kind of immunity enables fascism and horror.

It also warps our culture in a way that neuters morality, a necessary backstop to fascist escalations.

Material gain and status ascension are the dominating benchmarks in our society. Of all the other harms this produces, moral detachment destroys us in the deepest ways.

As a longtime market investor, I realized years ago that after awhile the money no longer matters to them — it becomes a game. “Boy with the Most Toys” wins. 🙁

yeah, kind of the natural enemy of billionaires is the govt you can see the dynamic in russia or here where the billionaires have influence but the head of state has the actual hammer

Bit even when they have enough to guarantee absolute immunity, billionaires still want more. I think it’s more that they’re addicted to the accumulation of wealth as an end in itself, and an appetite that can never be satiated.

They dont want to earn things, they want to take advantage of people and get away with it. That feels like winning to them. And so mamy people are like this who arent billionaires.

The flip side to the "corporations are people" mantra is that certain people have been allowed to amass levels of wealth that turn them into functional corporations. But the resources of these personal estates are marshaled to vanity projects and hedonism.
