now that its 15 years later and none of our fears came to pass we can all look back at the 360 era of every japanese publisher panicking to appeal to the western market and enjoy the very funnny games it led to as curiosities of a very stupid time rather than harbingers of the end of days

The entire lineup of Resident Evil games since 7 has been slow-dripping the camp absurdity back into them until Requiem has every single Leon line be as stupid as the original RE4 all over again

Forever remember Hudson's own US division feverishly defending it when it came out, and then less than a year later them turning around and being "okay, yeah, it was a mistake, sorry". lol

SEGA tried to turn Vector Man into a gritty FPS, too. The robot wasn’t even made of floating orbs; unclear why they changed the only thing people remembered about the character.

Capcom trhinking that the demographic that playedd RE4 wouldn't enjoy RE5 unless the game was a linear action shooter about blowing up africans with a rocket launcher. Now RE 9 is written in Maoist Standard English annnd peopel love it

people were ready to start world war 3 over DmC, a game now almost universally regarded as, "eh probably the best western-developed hack and slash all things considered"

Yeah and it at least put out a few bangers when Japanese devs were chasing the western AAA trends like binary domain and even though I'm lukewarm on it vanquish was cool

Though with resident evil 5 I don't enjoy it fucking sucks even with the distance of time and so does 6 probably the most incompetent of the third person shooter call of duty/gears of war craze bafflingly so

Is it homophobic? Oh yeah, buddy, it’s really homophobic. But have you seen a western game studio make a video game level out of a Fox News chyron before?

The most impressive thing about DmC is that they were able to put a lot of colors in it. Many 360 games didn’t have that technology

I think in my head I still feel it is a betrayal, but I've mellowed out on the feeling since we have Skies Unknown, Project Wingman, and the upcoming Wings of Thieves. Assault Horizon continues the small trend of Japan doing USA jingoism better than the USA

Front Mission unfortunately never recovered after Evolved...but we did get one of the funniest Giant Bomb Quick Looks of all time out of Left Alive

i’m still mad about left alive. i think design wise it’s such a cool elaboration on the ideas of mgsv. unfortunately it had a budget of six dollars

They really gave Lost Planet to the Turning Point: Fall of Liberty guys. They really gave Dead Rising to the MLB the Bigs 2 guys. They really gave Silent Hill AND Front Mission to the Marc Ecko's Getting Up: Contents Under Pressure guys.

I feel particularly pained as a Lost Planet 1 and 2 fan. Capcom chased the third person shooter trend and made two games that felt really mechanically distinct from western shooters at the time, and then gave the 3rd game to to a western studio that made the most boring 3rd person shooter ever.

My memories of those are more late PS2. Shadows of Rome and Nanobreaker still sit in my mind as the "Western gamers like lots of blood and dismemberment, right?" Games. Final Fight Streetwise can go to hell though.
