there are lots of popular things that aren't for me. that's normal. but watching the GTA 6 hype from outside the bubble feels different. what do you mean there's a gameplay reveal exclusive to netflix. why is the tone of every announcement if this game doesn't sell 100 million copies we're all dead

GTA 6 feels less like a game and more some kind of totem for a certain kind of dying gamer identity, that cannot economically or culturally sustain itself anymore. it represents a million different things and seemingly the least important of them is that it is an open world mission based video game

I think genuinely Take Two is a company that makes more money off of Being The Publisher of the Upcoming Grand Theft Auto than they ever could actually selling copies of it. GTAVI exists to justify stock prices, and eventually selling it means that the potential of GTAVI will plateau and decline

Honestly as someone who grew up on internet culture (and God knows GTA San Andreas and online latinoamerican culture are just impossible to separate), GTA VI is just such a weird thing, i know very much no one i know will play it even my high earning cousin ain't gonna be able to afford that shit,

and piracy has been dying out between raids, and an ever increasing presence of malware everywhere, or hell even if anyone i knew could afford it, our machines can't. Yet i know everyone i know will talk about it, before it probably dies out and fails because of its prices, and its all so odd

this game used to be about Driving Somebody’s Car Real Fast…. now it’s all about the “Pre-Order Bonus” which will save nobody from The Layoffs

It would be economically sustainable if Rockstar + TakeTwo weren't some of the greediest companies in gaming and had the entire AAA market shot itself in different body parts, repetitively, with a shotgun. The idea that GTA6 literally determines if AAA exists *at all* is a massive, systemic failure

Nah it was definitely San An. Niko wasn't nearly as charismatic as CJ. The plot and characters weren't as much fun. The Driving was much heavier and didn't lend itself to as much zany bullshit. San An nailed it on character, story, soundtrack, gameplay, all that jazz. And it was fun, in the sense

that it was a game where you could fuck around. V wasn't a game, it was prestige TV that grudgingly let you do missions sometimes and jealously controlled your access to cash and cool toys to keep you on a leash, and them it was the online money reaping machine that expected you to get severaljobs

Ngl i just remembered/realized that i never did finish San andreas' story, like i do know the story because of cultural osmosis, but i never did finish it, and its been quite longer since i last played it compared to GTA IV. But i do really like Niko, he is probably the thing i like the most of IV

It feels less like they’re launching a game and more like a very generic product. An event. The kind of thing to drive up stock prices, not unit sales. I really gives me weird feelings, especially since it’s from a series I enjoy and an entry I’ve been looking forward to for a very long time.

Looking at cyberpunk 2077 and No Mans Sky, it seems to me that an open world game nowadays is not released but a decade long construction side. And thats what brings us together as a community.

its one of those things where suits are gonna look at how much it sold being almost exclusively digital and how sony is making the right call not realizing that this is gta 6 and the moment your aisle shrinks and stores stop putting up your stuff you are just non existent to the masses

funny you say that cause it was announced gta 6 was doing a code in a box for its physical release months before sony killed physical.

the people want gta they do not really want anything else but for these last few decades when companies tried to rip off certain shit like gta and cod and fell flat on their face its a lesson they will not learn

It feels more like an event catered less towards people that focuses on video games as a medium and what makes them unique and more towards millions of masses that will consume it. GTA is not a game, it’s a phenomenon, in the same league as Marvel, Star Wars and other pop culture conglomerates.

This one game franchise has always felt disconnected from every other game, you ask casuals that don’t play games and they’ll tell you that they’re excited, you ask professionals who have worked or studied how the industry operates and they fear it for what and will do to the future of the medium.

It feels like one last hurrah, all eggs in one basket for the AAA. Shareholders expecting the rapid growth from a unique series of events to continue every quarter after rather than making preparation for a sustainable business model. How many copies does it need to sell to break even?

I’m not sure I can agree that it won’t sustain itself. I don’t like Rockstar or its game design sensibilities, but the general public loves GTA. 5 still sells. 6 is going to be big regardless of how shit it is.

Part of me hopes it's a failure, just to give the industry a reality check. I know it won't respond to such a failure by no longer being awful, but it might at least pull them out of the assumption that there are infinite customer with infinite time and money.

More and more about the game feels fake. This is like an episode of CSI or Bones. "You never heard of GTA six? Billion dollar money sink? No game game competed with it all month! Even popular streaming sites like Netflix scrambled to advertise *for them*." A parody of itself at this point.

I'm gonna upgrade my computer after 15 years and I've been feeding the build I'm gonna have and GTA6 page felt like "you kinda can but are you sure you want this"

The pillar of Ball & Gun will "save gaming" by making gaming a rich man's hobby... Meanwhile I'm here shilling a remaster of underrated DS RPGs. I couldn't care any less about GTA 6, I have better things to do.

ive felt a very big disconnect between the hype of gta 6 as a mystical object and the reality of gta 6 as, a gta game, a normal open world videogame that you play like any other videogame

I'd say that normies are just like this about GTA. back when V was new to PC, their anti-cheat started (repeatedly) banning me from GTAO over false positives, and every site where I'd ask for help, people would yell at me for cheating. even rockstar themselves hung up on the phone with me over it.

It is entirely hype around the two facts that GTA 5 is one of the biggest games ever made and is also a PS3 game from 2013. It's like if the last CoD game was Black Ops 2 and gun-and-ball gamers had to wait over a decade for their beloved slop franchise to return
