there are lots of popular things that aren't for me. that's normal. but watching the GTA 6 hype from outside the bubble feels different. what do you mean there's a gameplay reveal exclusive to netflix. why is the tone of every announcement if this game doesn't sell 100 million copies we're all dead

Based on the generations-long development and untenable hype cycle alone, I hope so badly that the case study of GTA 6 does not translate into “what publishers will decree games should be like for the next 10-20 years.” If this kind of monolith becomes the standard, it’s over. idc how much it sells

did some napkin math on it the other day and one of my coworkers is going to end up spending upwards of 2 grand in order to rent a ps5 in order to play it and only it. it's so bizarre

yea this is the guy who we think stole a couple hundred dollars from work to buy rare coins for a loss off of the internet. anyway he has a like decent pc and the cheap model of the ps5 but he wants the plus or whatever it's called because "GTA will need it"

I’ve always felt weird about the gta 6 hype. I get gta is quite popular but I genuinely never understood the hype for this game and the chances of me checking it out when it releases are next to zero

I'm seeing fatigue within gaming fans too. The game has taken too long to come out, can't live up to expectations, costs too much, is a code-in-a-box instead of a disc, and Rockstar are publicly in court over union busting and unfair dismissal cases. Basically, everything that's wrong with AAA.

It really does feel like we've hit the peak of putting all the gaming industry's eggs in one basket. I'm sure it'll be the best selling game of all time and everything will be fine and no one will drop this very very heavy expensive basket

always has been. GTA is the last standing one I think. It used to be Halo, COD, GTA, and a few other series, but GTA is the only AAA thing worth caring about right now.

Given recent news like Devolver going private again cause investors are so washed that they won't even let people make games anymore and the constant layoffs in the AAA space to a point of being comically evil I kinda hope it's mid, flops, and forces a full gaming reset in the AAA space.

Okay, so I'm not alone in thinking that rockstar has extremely unrealistic sales goals. The second it looks like it won't meet them, the majority of the dev team is getting laid off. Its not the early 2010's anymore, the entire console market has significantly changed.

Considering how anti uninion and evil the gta developers are I hope it flops spectacularly. I don’t mind the game but I deeply oppose the level of evil taketwo and rockstar have cultivated.

Honestly, the fact that there's no PC version at launch despite everyone seemingly jumping to PCs for gaming, the fact that the "base" version locks behind a lot of stuff, and other stuff means GTA VI's dead to me from day 1. I actually would be surprised if they reach that many copies, admittedly

setting a very funny precedent of not showing any gameplay trailers for the biggest game in a decade until three months before launch while they're at it, too

i dont understand it either but then i havent played a GTA game since the Vice City era and the only GTA style game i have ever really enjoyed and completed was Sleeping Dogs.

thanks for putting this to words. I get that it that is an important game but it seems like the second coming of christ but even more so a make it break it moment for the whole gaming industry which sounds insane to me, this is not hype this is a cult

It's a very strange, almost cult-like situation, with people believing it's going to be the greatest game of all time. It won't be. It won't be even close, given Rockstar's track record with how they treat GTA games. They downgrade in quality with each iteration. Tell me 5 > San Andreas, just try.

The original on ps one and the London version were the only ones I ever completed. Open world games are not really my thing. Any world bigger than the ff7 original world map on ps one and I get overwhelmed.

GTA 6 feels less like a game and more some kind of totem for a certain kind of dying gamer identity, that cannot economically or culturally sustain itself anymore. it represents a million different things and seemingly the least important of them is that it is an open world mission based video game

I think genuinely Take Two is a company that makes more money off of Being The Publisher of the Upcoming Grand Theft Auto than they ever could actually selling copies of it. GTAVI exists to justify stock prices, and eventually selling it means that the potential of GTAVI will plateau and decline

Honestly as someone who grew up on internet culture (and God knows GTA San Andreas and online latinoamerican culture are just impossible to separate), GTA VI is just such a weird thing, i know very much no one i know will play it even my high earning cousin ain't gonna be able to afford that shit,

and piracy has been dying out between raids, and an ever increasing presence of malware everywhere, or hell even if anyone i knew could afford it, our machines can't. Yet i know everyone i know will talk about it, before it probably dies out and fails because of its prices, and its all so odd

this game used to be about Driving Somebody’s Car Real Fast…. now it’s all about the “Pre-Order Bonus” which will save nobody from The Layoffs

It would be economically sustainable if Rockstar + TakeTwo weren't some of the greediest companies in gaming and had the entire AAA market shot itself in different body parts, repetitively, with a shotgun. The idea that GTA6 literally determines if AAA exists *at all* is a massive, systemic failure

Nah it was definitely San An. Niko wasn't nearly as charismatic as CJ. The plot and characters weren't as much fun. The Driving was much heavier and didn't lend itself to as much zany bullshit. San An nailed it on character, story, soundtrack, gameplay, all that jazz. And it was fun, in the sense

It feels less like they’re launching a game and more like a very generic product. An event. The kind of thing to drive up stock prices, not unit sales. I really gives me weird feelings, especially since it’s from a series I enjoy and an entry I’ve been looking forward to for a very long time.

Looking at cyberpunk 2077 and No Mans Sky, it seems to me that an open world game nowadays is not released but a decade long construction side. And thats what brings us together as a community.

its one of those things where suits are gonna look at how much it sold being almost exclusively digital and how sony is making the right call not realizing that this is gta 6 and the moment your aisle shrinks and stores stop putting up your stuff you are just non existent to the masses

funny you say that cause it was announced gta 6 was doing a code in a box for its physical release months before sony killed physical.

the people want gta they do not really want anything else but for these last few decades when companies tried to rip off certain shit like gta and cod and fell flat on their face its a lesson they will not learn

It feels more like an event catered less towards people that focuses on video games as a medium and what makes them unique and more towards millions of masses that will consume it. GTA is not a game, it’s a phenomenon, in the same league as Marvel, Star Wars and other pop culture conglomerates.

This one game franchise has always felt disconnected from every other game, you ask casuals that don’t play games and they’ll tell you that they’re excited, you ask professionals who have worked or studied how the industry operates and they fear it for what and will do to the future of the medium.

It feels like one last hurrah, all eggs in one basket for the AAA. Shareholders expecting the rapid growth from a unique series of events to continue every quarter after rather than making preparation for a sustainable business model. How many copies does it need to sell to break even?

I’m not sure I can agree that it won’t sustain itself. I don’t like Rockstar or its game design sensibilities, but the general public loves GTA. 5 still sells. 6 is going to be big regardless of how shit it is.

Part of me hopes it's a failure, just to give the industry a reality check. I know it won't respond to such a failure by no longer being awful, but it might at least pull them out of the assumption that there are infinite customer with infinite time and money.

More and more about the game feels fake. This is like an episode of CSI or Bones. "You never heard of GTA six? Billion dollar money sink? No game game competed with it all month! Even popular streaming sites like Netflix scrambled to advertise *for them*." A parody of itself at this point.

I'm gonna upgrade my computer after 15 years and I've been feeding the build I'm gonna have and GTA6 page felt like "you kinda can but are you sure you want this"

The pillar of Ball & Gun will "save gaming" by making gaming a rich man's hobby... Meanwhile I'm here shilling a remaster of underrated DS RPGs. I couldn't care any less about GTA 6, I have better things to do.

ive felt a very big disconnect between the hype of gta 6 as a mystical object and the reality of gta 6 as, a gta game, a normal open world videogame that you play like any other videogame

I'd say that normies are just like this about GTA. back when V was new to PC, their anti-cheat started (repeatedly) banning me from GTAO over false positives, and every site where I'd ask for help, people would yell at me for cheating. even rockstar themselves hung up on the phone with me over it.

It is entirely hype around the two facts that GTA 5 is one of the biggest games ever made and is also a PS3 game from 2013. It's like if the last CoD game was Black Ops 2 and gun-and-ball gamers had to wait over a decade for their beloved slop franchise to return

i assume this is a reference to red dead 2, which while one of the best selling games ever, was a disappointment for take 2 because the online didnt become a million dollar a day money printer within six months

Oh yeah I forgot that Red Dead Online even existed lmao. Goofy behavior to look at one of the most critically and commercially acclaimed games ever made and say "well the shoehorned online we only made because GTA did it was bad so it's a failure"

If it feels like this game has to be the best selling game in history, while also one of the highest priced games, that’s because it has to if they want to just break even at all.

GTA 6 would only be considered profitable if it earned more money than was put into it, even if the money put into it was earned from something else and not borrowed or invested.

I’m going to start by saying that the last GTA I played was SA on the PlayStation 2. It was fun when I was 14. I do not get the 6 hype. And even if it’s the perfect game it’s never going to live up to a decade+ of gamer expectations.

I just keep thinking about the confident assurance that it will sell Seventy Billion Copies, and like it definitely will do really really well, but it seems like if this sells one copy short of Seventy Billion the entire industry crashes

Personally, I'm hoping the game fails. I don't care who it is or what game it is, devs need to see that needing 1 billion dollars and 10 years to make a game is not sustainable in the slightest. Also, it's GTA, and those games have refused to innovate for decades. You wanna keep tapping X to run?

I feel nothing but contempt for it because it will be the nail in the coffin for physical games for two companies (SONY & M$). Same time I've had enough of those two and their "consoles" so they can fuck right off.

It really feels like the entire industry behind this thing is stuck in 2010s, drip feeding trailers that show nothing, „biggest and most expensive videogame ever”, exclusivity to one console desptie not being made by playstation studios. Im getting cyberpunk 2077 flashbacks and not in a good way

I miss when gta was a aaa series that was still allowed to be janky game with experimental features and serious story thats mostly disconnected from the gameplay like in gta san andreas or 3

Instead its going to be the most boring by the book shit ever that will outsell anything other than minecraft and will convince even more investors to keep making the most mid games imaginable

In short: i hate everything this game stands for and i dont even know how it will actually even look like, its dismissible actually, the game itself doesnt even matter anymore

Same, I actually enjoy the GTA series but some defiant "fuck corporations!" teen inside of me wants it to be a huge failure and signal the death of so called "quadruple A"

The later is because it cost 2 billion dollars to make, which means before marketing costs it needs 37 million sales just to break even and is a sequel to the most profitable game in history.

I like GTA 5 but I genuinely hope GTA 6 flops just so the industry can collapse. I'd probably enjoy the game but I wouldn't buy it personally, I'll stick to playing the older games that I was too young to experience.

Yeah, they got some of the best PR in corpo history, and got saved by games like RDR2 or San Andreas being loved by many people, combined with the hype culture built around GTA VI since 2012, it is also a franchise that much of everyone played aleast once

I am confident that GTA6 crashing and burning would have enormous far reaching negative consequences for the games industry. But also none of the devs who games I like would be effected at all because I don't play in those sectors of big western publishers 🤔

It's not only that it's exclusive to Netflix, it's that it's exclusive to Netflix *for 6 hours*, meaning that they're trying to get people to pay to see a trailer 6 hours early. Also people will just post the relevant clips to social media regardless, making the "exclusivity" entirely meaningless.

Meaningless to who? Netflix probably paid a pretty penny to get this access and TakeTwo/Rockstar get that money regardless if people on the Internet say they will watch or not. It will be interesting to see if they release viewership metrics.

Yeah, everyone gets that Corporate lives and breathes by all this meaningless bullshit, like a ridiculous 6 hour exclusivity. And it's corpo-minds like that that're killing everything good and well in ANY art "industry".

The funniest part for me is that discourse has moved so fast since GTA5 that there is literally no way for every bit of humor in the game to not be massively dated, so it's almost guaranteed to be even more cringe than most GTA games already are

I mean, dammed if you do dammed if you don't. If it sells "Like Shit", the industry explodes. If it sells well, we get a bunch more crap like this for god knows how long.
