it's wrapped carbon fiber man what could go wrong

Ian Boudreau@ianboudreau.com

Ah, the auto influencers have explained that this carbon fiber-wrapped ball, which sits right behind the driver's head, holds about 100kg of nitrogen pressurized to about 10,000 psi. Let me just go review the tolerances people found in their Cyber Trucks

So I will say, carbon fiber IS really good at holding things in (mostly/only if that thing is pushing against all sides at once). Ocean Gate was, uh, basically using the carbon fiber glue as the pressure vessel and it is shocking that it went down even once successfully before the end.

Nitrogen is an odourless and colorless asphyxiant that mixes with regular air, and this is a confined space... Good news is that it's a terrific fire extinguisher, but insanely cold so your asphyxia will be easy for the medical examiner to diagnose once you thaw

i mean, 78% of the air we breathe every day is nitrogen. it's inert in this regard, it just isn't oxygen. it doesn't do anything particularly bad to you, other than change the local air mix to low oxygen. It's not poison, you can still die.

except the forces are entirely different? carbon fiber's crazy tensile strength actually matters for something containing high pressure inside, while for a submarine it's literally irrelevant and it was basically just to shape the resin.

Yes, but jokes are supposed to be funny. This isn't, it just makes it sound like you don't understand the idea of compressive and tensile strength.

Not a fair comparison. The Titan submersible was subject to 4,285 PSI of pressure when it crushed. So as long as 10,000 PSI isn’t more than twice as much, this should be fine.

To be fair carbon fiber is pretty good at containing pressure (whereas OceanGate was stupidly using it to keep pressure out).. tensile vs. compression strength. However this is still a stupid idea because if that thing gets punctured the driver is getting turned into T-1000 frozen chunks.

i mean, and i loathe to do this, the pressures are opposite, carbon fiber isn't going to fail the same way when the pressure is on the inside. It's going to be much stronger.

All of these freaks hate thinking, I feel like "accidentally" vaporizing your own head would be the ideal end for most of them

It's never going to hit real production but I still think it's nice that Elon came up with a vehicle for cybertruck owners to look at and think "at least mine isn't THAT stupid."
