I love Workflowy but I also hate that it's the only good true outliner out there and that there's no local-first or local-only option/alternative. I'm already doing too much :( Anyone want to pick this up and vibecode something cool? - Electron/Tauri - Local first - Optional sync via whatever

For those of us who lament the classic, but sadly long gone Top of Tree horizontal outliner, the closest I've seen (beyond my own vibe-coded alternative) is Traverse. Visually it looks like a carbon copy of Tree, but not tested enough to vouch for it quite yet: apps.shakingthehabitual.com/traverse/

You could check my app: github.com/ClemPera/Nooto It's not exactly as Workflowy. It's note based and still in a development phase but it might fill some of your needs? I would be happy to hear your feedback on it. It's: - Tauri - local first with optional sync - e2ee

Given you discussed Obsidian, I assume either iteration of Logseq already burned you? I‘m also not really aware of anything else. I *am* hacking around on something but it‘s not as simple as Workflowy (intentionally) and it‘s all prototypes only slowly converging into One Thing.

Technically there‘s Dotflowy, which is very Workflowy-copied. Persists to Durable Object storage but you could vibe-retrofit that to purely local storage easily I would bet. Can‘t speak to it’s behavior or performance otherwise though.

Also out of interest of someone building such software: what‘s the dealbreaker with having pages as a container semantic? It is admittedly messy at times but I also think it *can* help organisation and context management at times.

I *also* use Obsidian. And probably won't stop. But Obsidian is a catastrophe for "be one window" and "now be a second window, with different content, because I'm doing two different things, on two different desktops". And that slays me.

I haven't used Workflowy before, but eyeballing it, I think what I want from a local-first intentionally-tunnel-vision editor here might be pretty much what local-first Workflowy describes. (If it's sufficiently Just Files, chill relationship to Obsidian is implicit, and doesn't cause contortion.)

It’s only in alpha right now, and the self-hosted binary is coming soon apparently, but I have been really enjoying Thymer. I think they have a lot of the same philosophy as you, backend Is apparently a single binary, end-to-end encrypted, fast, and desktop client has local markdown sync.
