Also interested in speculative fiction writing and philosophy - letting reality write new things.
For me it was reading into the database engineering literature that hammered this factoid home *hard*. A lot of algorithms that look neat on paper have uggly hiden constants that make them unattractive to actually apply to a problem.
"Polynomial time" is (and always has been) a terrible specification for efficiency. A running time of 10^100*n^1000 should not be an efficient algorithm. Moreover, many functions grow faster than polynomials but slower than exponentials, including the weird one in OpenAI's new result.
Y'see, a "Light Field" is a mathematical description of light passing through a given space, such as a window.
Through a number of different technologies - such as phased array optics - it is, at least theoretically, possible to reconstruct a light field rather than just an image.
Light-Field Displays are the closest thing to sci-fi holograms that are actually possible and it's disappointing that more SF doesn't use them.
A normal display replicates an image. But what if we took light directionality into account, and replicated the entire light field?
"You're getting off lucky, Sweens. Imagine if studios' store pages had to disclose details like how many hours of mandatory dev overtime went into getting a game over the line, the size of their gender pay gap, or, god forbid, [how big the pay gap is to the] lowest ranking junior!"

Using Black people’s likenesses for AI-generated ads where you cast them as stereotypes isn’t just incredibly unethical, it should be illegal www.houstonchronicle.com/politics/hou...
"AI can draft an essay for you, especially if you give it a high quality prompt."
Really? This is what MIT thinks high schoolers should learn?
MIT's "Day of AI" dayofai.org provides materials for K-12 teachers and claims to have reached over 5,000,000 students to date. 1/2
hey all

In 2005, Time Magazine did a cover story on “The Battle Over Gay Teens.” It’s the same handwringing we see now from “concerned” adults on behalf of young people.
“Kids are disclosing their homosexuality with unprecedented regularity–and they are doing so much younger.” time.com/archive/6596...
Josh Turek of Iowa, Democrat, comes out with one of the worst anti-trans ads yet.
Not only is it an anti-sports ad, it proposes a ban on federal funding for gender affirming care. That would hit all medicaid and medicare patients, and any ACA federally-subsidized plans as well.
Horrific.

Could I take shortcuts? Probably. At some points it would be easier. At other points it would be significantly harder. This entire editor, as painful as it is to build from the ground up, is easier than fudging with ProseMirror. I know that for sure.

But also today I had a prototype and it was mainly just rendering but then-
-I could collapse and expand headings inside individual atoms and you could precisely control what information took up canvas estate. Giant set of data cut to size in a moment.
Now that’s a cool experience. This vision *is* working out.
I started on this journey around 2023. In 2025 I started to have enough to really get moving.
I still have *a lot* to learn. I keep finding problems as I create the circumstances where they’re really visible.
I’m not a political journalist, so was gladly surprised at the community I found here last night. To Americans anxious about the upcoming elections, a key thing we learned in Brazil that might help you: DO NOT engage with the far-right online. Don’t share rage bait. Amplify your people. Ignore them.
The speed with which so many execs cozied up to this authoritarian says more about their revealed preferences than long term strategic thinking. They saw a chance for what they saw as a "business friendly" autocrat and oligarchic consolidation and jumped at it.
...I have to remark, with frustration.
People outside the imperial core actually *get* that the fascists and autocrats will do them harm.
Meanwhile people in the imperial core get shafted again and again and nothing changes and yet they keep voting for violence.
A remarkable death drive.
On a grandi, on a mûri, tant pis, tant mieux.
There is blatant voter suppression happening right now in Brazil: flights cancelled and buses suspended to Northeastern capitals where Lula holds the majority, polling stations changed to thousands of kms away last-minute, voters in London told they need to go to Edinburgh… This is criminal.
Our First Nations traditional territory maps are progressing. We're likely a week away from completing our alpha build. This will replace the Native-Land.ca territory maps, which went offline earlier this year (though they have other maps still online). It'll go online at knowledgekeepr.com
Hi. I, a trans woman, am the Executive Producer of this show. I wrote the question. He called trans girls men. He has now said it in three different places in the past week.
The first time I got the police called on me I was 10 years old. A white girl stole and broke my glasses and knew everyone would side with her if she cried and pretended I choked her because I was not white.
This was not the last time something like this would happen as a kid.
So in the end, it doesn't matter what kinds of experiments people do comparing review-shaped objects extruded from LLMs to actual reviews written by people. Comparing them is and always will be a category error.
>>
Not only are all of these contingent notions, they also misframe what it is we are doing when we review papers.
Yes, we are evaluating papers, but we are evaluating them not against some ground truth of the world, but against our own understanding, as scientists and scholars, of our fields.

Kansas Dem Sen. nominee Adam Hamilton on trans rights:
“I don’t think we should take a small group of people and bully them, pick on them, and hurt them. I understand one thing really clearly when it comes to transgender people, and that is Jesus told me I was to love my neighbor as I love myself”
The elite hate us being educated, us educating you, you educating each other, and you having time to do this. Stop granting that it's the university that is elitist inherently: it's been made that way for a reason. Some more points below also on the marriages between patriarchy, AI, capitalism...
“Palantir cofounder and CEO Alex Karp states ‘AI will undermine the influence of highly educated, often female voters and give it to working class men.
We have feminine energy running our cities and our courts,’ he complained.”
Decades of hard-won progress erased in a few short years by a handful of politicians & newspaper editors who figured that non-stop screeching about asylum seekers and trans people was the only way to maintain electoral consent for perma-austerity while every part of the state visibly rots.
"This hatred, it’s like a cancer. It spreads because people will always say, ‘Oh, it’s just the illegals.’ It’s not.
“From what I experienced, it was anyone who was remotely different, different creed, different colour, different sexuality.”

The thing with choosing the lesser of two evils is that it incentivizes the "good" side to be only slightly less evil then the "evil" side.
Gotta reward being good, not just less evil.
Third, automating science is not really possible in the way described. In the same way a machine cannot eat food for us because we'd starve: scientific understanding is for us to experience and share with others as a psychological state. It's a process and a cognitive state not an output.
It's not like biology has a single definition for life — nor do they need a definite meaning to start work. The whole point of science is the understandings produced by the work: that's what knowledge production is. You don't put definitions in and out comes something else. You toil to understand.
Just going to be straight here — no pun intended:
I am the only journalist who has been covering this issue in depth, was often the only journalist at hearings, and was the only one explaining what DOJ was actually arguing here.

BREAKING: SCOTUS rejects Trump admin's request to allow it to end gender-affirming medical care in prisons — a significant, if tentative, rejection of one of the admin's most extreme anti-trans arguments.
Only Thomas and Alito noted they would have granted the stay.

he mentions how, even if AI can accomplish something (which he also mentions it doesn’t get it), it halts any progress of the craft in the future
