The constant condescension about ai is another aspect of it that makes me hate it more. The assumption is you can only be against it because you don't understand it like I do. No man. I don't like voluntarily making every human enterprise dependent on a tech run by a tiny group of financial maniacs

From the start I thought 1) it should just be called autonomous software 2) if not let’s abbreviate it Ai so it’s not confused with my friend Albert 3) is it really a good idea to distill all human thoughts & ideas into an instantaneous impulse? Humans? 4) if you’re lonely call up an old friend

It seems to be something of a running theme with the techbro crowd. Anyone suspicious of crypto or NFTs, for example, got a similar response. Of course, the difference here is that big corpos and investors have put their whole ass into the genAI thing for some reason.

Reading this reminds me of my wife comments re endless dumming down - she teaches in a school (UK) she says that students can't read an analogue clock any more, it has to be digital Same with old fashioned map reading

It’s talked about in such vague terms, too. All I ever wanted were concrete examples for how I can use it in my field. I don’t need it to write emails or generate code. If you can create a chatbot, you can create an FAQ. It’s against policy to upload info I work with. So what then

I read tech bros—who I suspect aren't programmers—bragging about how many agents they have building stuff 24/7, but they never say what they are building. I haven't heard of a single program released into the wild that was built this way.

One thing it helped with was buying an insurance policy but even then I had to upload the individual sbc's (insurance specs), when AI ought to be able to access the internet at least as well as me. I asked it to compare on a few terms and that saved me a lot of boring reading. ONE THING.

It's also so silly warching all these supposed grown ups coming up with arguments why their particular niche will not be replaced by AI while acrively working on replacing someone else's (while another someone is working on replacing THEIR niche).

In the rosiest of scenarios, everyone who is getting onboard with this stuff is just lining up to be brutally and aggressively milked for all they are worth

Like great, it's neat you've made agents that do actual work for you. Is that agentic work going to increase your income or are whatever gains you see from that going to be eaten up and more when they jack your subscription fees, which they are 1000% going to do

Also if they were actually right and it will magically stay cheap and can magically do all their work for them, doesn't that mean they're just training their own replacements? Oh wait, these are probably professional meeting-attenders rather than people who do things. That makes a little more sense

My other thing is, they've had a few years to refine this stuff now, and they keep talking about all the amazing productivity gains they're making with it and blah blah blah, and all of that has led to... what, exactly? A Coca-Cola commercial? Where the fuck are the emperor's pants

Interesting to contrast corporate resistance to unionisation and collective bargaining on wages terms and conditions that might push up labour costs with willingness to become dependent on monopoly AI labour supplier.

Exactly, they HAVE to. When I was responsible for selling LLM solutions nothing I did could show us coming close to covering even half our costs. Given that it’s a scam every megacorp is now dumping its entire future into, it’s one million percent going to be the public socializing this loss too.

Not kidding, the first one I spotted was a Tax Court case that a layman could literally make a deadly mistake with. The anti-bullying one was indeed a real thing that happened and could be easily disproved with a simple FUNCTIONING Google search and no legal knowledge. The domains were SO far off💀

Not sure if anyone's been fired yet, but at least one case had a motion thrown out, and one federal judge in Alabama disqualified the lawyers from their own case (Johnson v. Dunn; the firm was allowed to continue).

I mean I went to grad school for machine learning and like, things have changed since Markov chains If you’re basing your understanding on that I mean no condescension but I don’t think “I understand this best” is a safety blanket you wanna wrap all the way around your brain

I am being forced to implement my first feature using it and goddamn I hate it. the specific feature isn't horrible really (deciding categories for products because merchants really want to use the goofiest ones) but I just feel dirty anyway

this is why I keep hammering that it's just the same guys as NFTs. exactly like how that was the future, we understand it and you don't, and stop complaining because progress is happening and we don't need permission, but it's just money guys? oh yeah.

I’m always going to be upfront about how unimpressed I am with their lack of effort. There’s really no argument around it. “You haven’t created anything new” is the end of it. I’ll have no problem standing to AI chuds in my future.

Yeah, I've been saying the same thing about AI that I said about crypto: if it's being marketed to me despite its masters hating everything about me (middle-aged, broke, female, queer, sexually unavailable to them), it's not a business. It's a greater-fool scam. I will not be their greater fool.

My sentiments as well. We need to leave certain areas of our humanity alone. The random expressions of human written artistic endeavors are no venue for arithmetic algorithms. In my opinion of course.
