"Why stop at AI use? We could have mandatory disclosures for what shampoo brand the developer uses" — Epic boss Tim Sweeney says Steam should ditch its AI generated content disclosure. https://bit.ly/4a193vt

Expedition 33 is the main one. Apparently "they covered it up after release" is enough for an excuse for using GenAI to assist with the development of the game. Still doesn't have a tag on Steam, either.

If it's so common, then it's not a problem to disclose it? It's just a checkbox on your Steam page mate. Why does Tim sounds so afraid to disclose AI usage? It costs zero dev money to check the box. Just do it bro, add it on Epic. You think devs shouldn't disclose the Unreal Engine logo? No problem

Got added into an "anti AI" list after this one, despite nothing in my post criticizing AI. Why? People aren't proud to disclose AI? That's weird. AI is cool, right? Why wouldn't you disclose its usage? Aren't you proud of using AI in your work? 🫢🫢🫢

Why stop at razor wire infant garrotes? We could have mandatory disclosures of how many kittens you've nuzzled. When everything is the same as everything else, I can always make a very good point!

Yeah, not only has he managed to ensure I won't ever even install their launcher, I've taken the additional step of deciding to not buy another game using the Unreal Engine. Which is okay, because I currently have a backlog that will last me the rest of my life.

Well if your shampoo has known ethical concerns for a major section of the population, maybe? Like if you got your sound library by actually harming animals and recording it, you should probably also be forced to disclose that.

If for some strange reason the shampoo was involved in the development process, then yeah we would want you to disclose it. Its the process you have to disclose... What the hell is your point Tim

That's the kind of "joke" that a 13 year old kid uses when they know they're doing something bad but they're afraid to admit it, so they just deflect to something else. This is CEOs telling on themselves that they're a) aware that what they're doing is bad, and b) intellectually stunted teenagers.

Unfortunately, we're already screwed because a game that used GenAI to make it is likely going to win multiple GotY awards. The new tactic will just be not declaring it on Steam and not mentioning it at all.

I really wished that whoever overviewed that clown.. would have thrown the claims if mayor studios that AI creates better gameplay and opportunities to gamers in his face. Because his complain to get AI tags removed, shows the opposite.

Steam is no different, their meaningless GenAI warning can just be ignored by developers. They're happy to protect games that used GenAI.

Guy, whose empire is based on creating the minimal amount of mediocre content, doesn't want to have to do any amount of work ... yeah, that tracks.

the amount of people who fight tooth and nail against the very expectation of regulation and identification of such controversial technologies by making disingenuous comparisons to mundane things, head completely stuck in their arses... not just tim sweeney, we need to call out other techbros too

A few years back Sweeney responded to Steam's NFT ban by opening the doors to NFT/web3/play to earn slop on Epic Game Store. I don't think it helped EGS's fortunes.

my slightly left of middle ground stance is all studios using genAi in games in any capacity forfeit all IP rights, past, present and future. meaning their entire catalog is up for torrenting and cracking, and even re-uploading to steam by anyone. using genAi means you are ok with IP theft, so.....

People. They have rotten brain for voluntary doom scrolling 100% human slop for years. But they feint offense because of AI slop. Where were they the last 15 years???? It's like all the stupid wannabe influencers slop flooding youtube to complain about AI slop.

Well too bad he doesn't control Steam's store. He barely controls a much smaller store which can't gain marketshare even though it gives games away for free every week. Maybe I am crazy but could it be that people whom actually buy from game Stores like the idea of knowing what to expect.

The ability to speak does not make you intelligent case in point here. No wonder Epic just keeps taking Ls in the battle against Steam when you got this out of touch corporate ghoul running Epic.

Translation: I wanna be a cheap fuck and not pay artists while simultaneously degrading games with substandard art made in unethical ways, and having to admit that makes the games sell less.

“Everyone’s always asking me ‘is this stolen?’ But if I started answering those questions, what’s next? ‘What’s your social security number?’” - Extremely Trustworthy Pawn Shop Owner

Oh I know the answer, there’s no positives. As someone who has worked with generative AI for the past year and a half ish in tech, there are 0 redeeming qualities, data retention is a nightmare, most of the code it spits out is just compiled from the same like 5 stack overflow forum posts

And this is the big part, despite being called “generative AI,” it can’t generate new things, it can only solve known questions, and in most cases, you already know the answer and if you don’t, then you Google it, a skill that most developers should have. Just a different perspective instead of env

oh okay i guess you don’t want my money then. kind of odd you’d be so adamantly against taking my money. i’m not really asking for much. the other guy seems to have no trouble with my requests. i’ll just keep going to him i guess

Both Steam and Epic Games agree on the core issue here though. They're both arguing that if people know your game has AI generated content, they won't want to buy it.
