NEW: The first two years of Massachusetts' millionaire tax has raised $3 billion more than expected. And rather than driving the rich away, IPS researchers found that the number of millionaires has *increased.* Tax the rich. Greg Ryan in @bloomberg.com:

when people have a better safety net, they are happier and the quality of life for EVERYONE increases...rich people LIKE that, just like everyone else. The Nordic countries have shown that...happiest countries on Earth, consistently.

I'd like to see the graph for capital gains tax rates. From FDR to Reagan, the financial sector was about the size it should be to do its job of investment. After Reagan, it became a speculative nightmare, growing twice as fast as the GDP. We need to tax this sector sharply.

I think it says a lot that the top 0.1% is holding so much money that spilling that into public services bolsters the ability of actual businesses to thrive and reach the "millionaire" mark.

business is controlled by investors. increasing generic w outsourced customer service, increasingly on line w no box stores, fewer employees as adjunct or pt positions w no benefits. internet based business like streaming, google, fb, tik tock are run by ad income. corp health systems

Yep, and having high availability of high quality employees who have an affordable cost of living beats low taxes any day of the week. Millionaires have been moving along with their businesses to New York City in droves because other places are unaffordable for their workers to live.

The point is not to find ways to make millionaires happy but it's worth pointing out rich people much like petulant toddlers have a better grasp on what they want than what they need. Don't let policy be dictated by those who always scream "ice cream!" long past developping a tummy ache

It's almost like taxing the rich gives the state more resources to make itself a nice place to live It's almost like the community can allocate those resources more wisely than a gang of unelected randos who lucked into family fortunes

This worked in the 40's, 50's and 60's too. Massive upper tax brackets (up to 91%) - This gave rise to the modern middle class that created the economic super-power that is (well used to be) the US. Oligarchies are not world powers. They are corrupt 3rd rate governments (see Russia).

Agreed! As a union member at UMass Amherst, we fought hard for this. And our reward has been 500+ days without a new contract, substandard pay, and threats of take-backs from the university admin. But hey, at least they put a food bank on campus for us!

Griffin moved his primary residence (for IRS deduction purposes) to Florida, but it was purely symbolic. He still lives in Illinois most of the time, he still makes most of his money here, he’s still putting his name on things here. If we tax the rich, we’ll still be taking more of his money.
