It's crazy how hard it is to sleep on a plane but on a train I sleep better than in my own bed

When I was a child, I always thought to myself "If I become a kajillionaire, I will build a big rail loop that will always be running and I can sleep on the train whenever I want"

i firmly maintain that sleeper trains is the closest thing humanity has to teleportation. you get on the train, sleep, then wake up hundreds of km away. it rules.

You know the first Laguna-dream moment on Final Fantasy VIII? I'm sure they were too comfy for their own good and just fell asleep there. The Laguna thing just took advantage of their train-sleepiness.

Interesting that we invented the perfect transport and the perfect sleep aid and they're the same contraption and yet the US will not build more of them

I wonder why it's a difficult story for America to adopt trains more broadly. For such a large land with history linked to mining and riding across the plains, trains should have become a cultural cornerstone.

The US uses trains a lot, but primarily for freight. For some reason, they nationalised passenger services and privatised the rails themselves around the same time.

best sleep in my life was on the green car on the shinkansen. Immediately felt a deep shame that the US didn't have low cost high speed rail, my ass would be taking trips all the time (and reaping the sleep rewards)
