I was recently in a work strategy seminar that unwisely mixed business leaders with scientists, and the divide between the pro-corporate speak business types and the "if I sit here quietly for long enough maybe they will let me get back to real work that matters" scientists was STARK.

Most managers see themselves as the creative ones regardless of the field. They see themselves as splitting the work into segmented tasks which they assign to code and word smiths.

This is a whole ass fact. People that I worked with who pulled no punches, gave straight talk and maybe cussed a little were some of THE most productive people. They didn’t have time for corporate theater. They needed shit done and communicated it easily.

As a Gen Xer I have no time for corporate speak or any other BS fancy talk. Just boil it down to one sentence so I can yes it and do what I want anyway.

I had a manager once who said ‘basically’ so many times in meetings that I used to tally it and publish his BPM (basicallys per meeting) afterwards. The other people in the meeting could see me doing it and knew what I was doing, and occasionally struggled to hold it together.

Our training department lead is a 25 year old dweeb who is loud and proud about starting at the company at 16 and never working anywhere else and for dropping out of HS and never going to college but "landing a career" Incidentally our training dept fuckin sucks Drank the most Kool aid

The key words here are 'fall for': if you'll fail for corporate bullshit you're not capable of evaluating what's in front of you. Problem is an actual leader would see it was bullshit so is already a problem to the system.

Like it really feels like a good chunk of people simply do not experience certain arrays of thinking or emotional sensitivity. It means its easier for them to be a good worker, good student, make money, but it also means they are less aware of problems in normative behavior.

Kind of like the difference between adhd and non adhd people but even bigger. (Though note adhd is a wide spectrum so *a lot* of people are on it)

This is surely very controversial but I genuinely think some people are just less sentient. And as far as I can tell, they both tend to function 'better' while also being worse people.

My dementia-ridden, tech-illiterate supervisor is completely unable to articulate specific, concrete expectations or engage meaningfully with methodological research design discussions. So he reverts to nonsense platitudes like "we're futurists" and literally nothing gets done in our dept

Executives who issue corporate speak are the least equipped to make good business decisions, including hiring decisions. Or executives issue corporate speak when they're skimming from the firm and only hire the most gullible employees and take on the most gullible partners.

It would be cool if the lessons learned from sociological studies like this were ever applied anywhere but alas the ones who use "corporate speak" control all the money that makes all the decisions.
