Great article, so much funny stuff in the overall depressing state of tech. I was hoping to see a mention of Richard Dawkins in the "conscious AI" part 🤣

My skip-level manager has to explain the reality of AI to senior leaders. We are expected to use Copilot regularly when we have a license. I've found AI is great at finding the stuff I overlooked.

I'm fascinated by this dual reality of people happily vibe coding and then the reality of most AI implementation at scale which has just been a profound anti-labor mess and environmental catastrophe, orchestrated by a cabal of technofascist bullshitters who think introspection is optional

I see those realities sort of converging. We are already seeing cutting edge models which are out of reach of individuals. As subsidies end this will worsen. I think most people will be stuck with access to crappy tools no matter what.

Im curious as well. Although if you were hoping to mimic Claude performance, reddit says you’d need a server room and hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Deepseek (foss) at launch could do about 80% of what paid models could do, but that 80% encompasses most of the small tasks people actually use that isn't generative. I hear it runs fine on lower end hardware due to being less bloated. I have zero faith in ai being truly useful in a meaningful way.

The market is more interested in responding to AI hype than accepting reality. I'm not sure we're *quite* at a reckoning, yet, b/c the market continues to overreact to the upside and underreact to the downside. Traders (incl. algos) continue to show reluctance to sell. But. The bigger they come.

In the early nineties when McDonald's introduced steamed prep cabinets my store manager thought they could cut grill team members because of the new technology. It actually required more grill team members, especially during rush! I kept trying to explain why it didn't work for a week. Then I quit.

they will retcon it so they cleverly saw the pitfalls the whole time, or they just won't mention that they spent years mostly ignoring all the problems

There is no substitute for experience. Those Ford engineers who’ve been there for 20 years have seen a lot. They’ve seen great ideas not work because of XYZ many times. Yet they’re just ignored and fired because of “shiny object.” The fecklessness of upper management has never been clearer.
