Too Late to Die Young is the name of Harriet Johnson's 2005 memoir. In the 3 parts of this essay I talk about Johnson, Singer, my years doing agricultural development & famine relief work in Africa followed by career in Silicon Valley, and being parent of a person with complex disabilities. 2/2

I aged out of technical writing, after being involved with it one way or another (writer, editor, manager, etc) for a large part of my so-called working life 1980 — 2022. Sure am glad I'm not trying to find that kind of work these days. It's brutal out there.

I'm not endorsing the content of the original post here (he said, journalistically), but let's just do a little fact-checking on John McGuire's notion about illegal immigration and Charlottesville real estate prices, shall we? 🧵

The only reason I can think of for this news not being absolutely everywhere is that large media orgs don’t want to be seen as putting their thumbs on the scales a week before election day. And that’s cowardly as shit.

Meanwhile, one of the most harmful policy movements in America right now is a property tax revolt that is shifting us away from our most economically efficient tax, all so property owners can have a little more in their pockets next month.

Apparently, some Houston voters are putting their I Voted stickers on the Lorenzo Salgado Araujo memorial. Stephen Miller is ALREADY trying to scapegoat others for losing whatever races they lose in Texas and elsewhere. This is a vivid testament that for some voters, his murder squad is the reason.

Does Rubio really say that? That explains a lot. Here's what I know about my great-grandparents: 2 of them lived in Finland & spoke Swedish; 2 of them lived in Ireland and spoke Irish, & 4 of them lived in Scotland & spoke Highland. The Finnish great-grandmother was named Sana Laena. That's it. 1/2

This is why in his speech Rubio identifies himself not as a son of immigrants from Cuba but as "a great-grandson of settlers who arrived in the new world from Spain." It's a common device used by those who wish to claim Latin America's Western roots without extending it to the non-Western "other."

Anybody who derives their American identity by their connection to "setllers" who came to "the New World" 150 years ago is living in a realm of nostalgia. Like all fascists do.

This ad is bizarre and laughable to run when Americans have real concerns before an election, but I think that’s exactly why they’re running it. They’re terrified that the base is going to stay home and they’re panicking and trying to mash the old buttons to prevent that.
