I'm increasingly under the impression that many of our most prominent establishment reporters simply aren't all that fucking bright

I think they’re just incredibly easy for presidents to manipulate. Dubya walked with all his cutesy nicknames for reporters so Trump could run with his army of blond young women who lie with abandon while making reporters feel they’re special.

If "I guess I'll go to bluesky to proclaim that a christofascist propagandist was nice to me in private and then be surprised at the blowback" isn't trolling, it's just politically and culturally dim and tone deaf

though a good chunk is also likely the result of the decades of ownership editorial conditioning you get at these major establishment outlets as a continued condition of employment in an industry devouring itself alive owned by people who demand you have no discernable personality on socials

but even if you're boxed in by legal and ownership constraints that was just a stupid post and he would have been better off just saying nothing or posting a photo of a kitten

I think he genuinely needs to believe that the administration and its lackeys are just "playing the game" and proof is in the supposed kindness behind the scenes, when the Game is on pause.

I think there is also a personality type that is fostered in certain elite circles that involves a carefully calibrated sucking up. Some of us have been adjacent to those spaces but we were taught to call bullshit so we check out.

Political reporting isn't a career that rewards clever muckrakers. Your job is primarily to be a conduit to disseminate information how and when the owner of that information wants it public. The best person for that is an amiable nitwit content with being an unthinking pawn in exchange for access.

Has it really not occurred to these WH press corps members that an insult-you-publicly-but-wink-wink-be-nice-in-private is yet another way to 'work the refs' & buy more credulous coverage? Just because you get timely, cheery emails (of no substance) doesn't mean you're not being played for a sucker.

one doesn't really get the sense he's thought much about that, or he's so boxed in by the legal and ownership constraints of his employer he was just babbling, at which point it's better off to just be quiet

This is the same kind of BS that went so far to pissing me off after Lindsey Graham died. Sure he was a butt-kissing sychophant who has enabled at every turn a malevolent fascist in shredding the constitution and all the values we hold dear. But he sure was a swell guy!

yeah curiously every time I reach out to the White House or FCC I get some sneering denial or silence guess I don't attend the right brunch functions

When I worked in journalism, there was blatantly obvious divide between the journalists who would do research, verify information and more-or-less just do their homework and the (majority) of journalists who were both-sides stenographers. Often senior figures were entirely stenographers.

And yes, the very conservative ones almost entirely saw their role as one of advocacy and knew they would be rewarded if they were good advocates. Some of them were just mediocre and many of them were irrationally resentful and wanted the rewards of broadcasting what they were told to broadcast.

Not very bright, and with a pathetic need to feel like the flacks they deal with have at least some professional respect for them. When in fact -- in Republican and Democratic administrations alike -- they're held in utter contempt.

Friendly exclamation points, y'all!! And here I was upset that teenagers who have been abducted and trafficked by ICE are being raped and impregnated at detention centers. Sorry, I mean: "Raped and impregnated!! 😘"
